Does anyone know if I need to fit an extra cooler to the auto gearbox of an R reg 1998 Renault Megane Scenic 2.0 RXE auto?

Hi, I have just replaced my Scenic 2.0 ltr Auto S reg, when I first towed with it and locked up the gearbox through over heating after about 40 miles ( if locks into 3rd gear) then had a cooler fitted, local gearbox people had problem locating kit, they got informaytion that even without towing hilly teraian (ie: Wales) could cause lock up , I never towed with it after fitting through season end etc.
