Repairing Awning Fibre Glass Pole

On our last trip due to the wind one section of our porch awning pole split. We had a spare section of pole that came with the awning but are struggling understanding how to thread the elasticated cord through the new section of pole.

Any advice would be appreciated?
 
Normally if you buy a repair kit it comes with a long piece of stiff wire, a bit thinner than a wire coat hanger. If you can find something similar then tape the elastic cord to the end of the wire and thread the wire and cord through.
