Replacing caravan carpet

We've just bought a 1994 Swift Rapide and want to give it a bit of a face-lift. The carpet is worn out and we'd like to replace it but we're a bit worried about taking it up because it was fitted before the units. We'd prefer to take the whole thing up rather than just cut round the edge but don't know if it is possible to lift the units? Also, when we experimented taking up one end of the carpet we found that the vinyl flooring under the seating does not extend under the carpet, it's just bare wood. We'd be very grateful if anyone could suggest how best to tackle this. In fact we'd be grateful for any tips on renovating an old van as we're feeling a bit discouraged at the moment!

Many thanks, Sue & Frank (very new caravanners)

Hi Frank

Let us know how you get on.

Chris
Certainly will- have bought the carpet & a sharp knife! We were feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the jobs we had to do but we're feeling a bit more optimistic now. No doubt we'll be back again for more advice. (We might even take the caravan out somewhere one day...)

I'd just like to say a big thanks for the really useful info on this thread. We brought our van home from storage this weekend to do some cleaning / maintenance. I was going to try and clean the carpet, but was not looking forward to scrubbing someone else's 10 years of muck out of it. After reading this thread I suggested fitting a new carpet to my husband and he agreed!

Hi

Just in the middle of doing the carpet but have come home for something to eat! When we took the old carpet up, there was half of Newquay beach under there- glad we decided to tackle the job. Also a few sinister stains which we hope are spills rather than d**p (daren't even say it..)

Sue

Damp in a caravan floor usually exhibits black mould like wet-rot and the ply would be soft. If yours look like stains there most likely exactly that. Happy carpeting.
