You purchase a tester (Martindale) from any caravan dealer /DIY/electrical trade supplier.
You just plug in into the 13 amp socket and the lights tell you if its OK or what the fault is.

hi mike have a look in this months PC they also tell you how to adapt a reverse polarity lead we have to used it frequently in Spain and France saftey is worth a few pounds. happy vanning peter
The other thing that a plug in tester will tell you is whether there is an earth or not. This is perhaps more important that the reversed polarity and can often be found on continental sites.
