Reversing light query

Just had the annual service done and mentioned that the reversing light on the van was not working. The engineer had a look and sussed out the problem and went away a bit richer. Its the second time I have used him and again I'm very satisfied, also reasonably priced. Two new tyres and a working reverse light, what could be better?

I then connected up my car and no reversing light. I did the same as the engineer and tested the cable end and there was no power. When the engineer showed me it working, it was connected to his power supply........so I wonder if it is the towbar plug on my car????

My question is....which is the reversing light pin in the towbar connector? There are seven to choose from.

Norman.

It is the top pin number 1 on the grey socket. It will not work reverse light unless both plugs are in as the earth for the light is on the other plug.

I understand it is now a requirement (since Jan 2012) for MoT of any car fitted with 13 pin socket that the bulb failure warning system is tested and checked as OK . Quite how they are going to do this remeains to be seen as the simple LED plug in testers may not take the same current as a filament bulb and this give a false negative result. The built-in check system on my MB 220 is very sensitive to this and often gives a false warning.

The LED tester works fine, as it only takes milli amps to sense, i have had one some time as my son is a service manager in a main dealership and mine is the same as used by MOT tester.
