Rheostat Setting

I have Peugeot Boxer 2.2 diesel and wish to reset dimmer. I have switched on lights and pressed Mode button followed by up/down buttons to no avail. I can alter headlights up or down. Handbook for Rheostat says there are 8 settings. What am I not doing correctly.
 
Hi Retread I do not have problem with headlight setting they are on display 1 to 3. The Rheostat dimmer/brightener is the problem.the Mode button is on dash near to the door and to the left are 2 buttons up or down. The lights have to be on. There are 8 settings according to handbook but they are NOT being displayed on the screen so you do not know what setting you are on. I am in Spain on holiday and other people have had a go to no avail.
 
As I said the dimmer is for the panel illumination, try again at night with the ignition on and the headlights on as well, watch for any change in the instrument illumination while you play with the buttons. Perhaps others on here can be more illuminating?

I have the blinds closed and can see the instruments. I have noticed that when I have headlights on and wish to alter the height from 1 to 3 and press the down button the light adjustment goes up. I am thinking have previous 2 owners had a problem in this area?
