Right or Wrong

Is it really neccasary to use the pink/similar in the loo flushtank, the reason I ask is that in the last van pink was used and I used to spend hours and hours cleaning/flushing it out because of the algea/black stuff that use to form. And it always came back!!
So on this new van I dont use anything in the flush tank just water, with blue in the holding tank.
Should I lubricate the blade?

It is certainly not necessary to use any additive in the flush water.
In fact , Pink is responsible for the algae as it forms a perfect breeding ground for it as it goes slimey just like a Petrie Dish.

The blade needs nothing doing to it until storage time when a spray of silicone lubricant is good for it.

I read somewhere (here? PC?) that some folks put milton in the flush tank. Is this a good idea?

Milton is not something that I would use as the chlorine in it can play havoc with seals etc if not quickly flushed through. I plan to look at the Truma Aquastar 1+2 stuff when I next go shopping but I have used Puriclean in the past when I left some pink flush in the tank for a few weeks and the dreaded slime started. However, over the years (too many!) I have found that by not leaving pink flush in the tank when not using the caravan does prevent the gunge forming. On the old cassette systems I used to drain it off to a 5l bottle and run a couple of litres of fresh water through the system and then take out the toilet roll holder to let the tank dry out. Not yet found a good way of doing it on the pedestal models so just drain and flush through with fresh water. After seeing some people tip in way over the required amount of pink flush I do wonder if some of the problems encountered are caused by using too much. I few people I have spoken to when on site have said they have no idea of the size of the flush tank so they simply slosh in what they think is the correct amount.

Pink additive cannot be vital because my caravan doesn't have a separate flush tank, but uses water from the same on-board tank as the water that comes out of the taps.

I use Elsan organic. You can use it in both the flush and holding tanks and to date I've had no problems. I don't generally hold with all this eco stuff, but this was the same price as a bottle of pink and blue and it means I only need carry 1 bottle.
