Road conditions in Europe

Would appreciate a bit of help and guidance here. Travelling down to Spain with Mondeo estate and Lunar 462 caravan. Have had a ferry crossing booked for 14th January since well before this snow, but am not anticipating any difficulty in getting to the terminal in Hull, and I am given to understand that at Zeebrugge one is straight onto the motorway system, which we intend to use all the way into Spain (in spite of the cost of the tolls), via San Sebastian, with stops at Beaugency and Twin Lakes. My hope is that as in this country, (where the motorways are the first to be kept open), does anyone have experience of whether this applies on the mainland, and is there anywhere on that particular route that would in these conditions be particularly hazardous with a front wheel drive Mondeo and caravan. Also, is there any English speaking organisation to whom one can enquire about current travel conditions on an hourly (if necessary) basis.

Postponing the trip is not really an option, as travel insurance is not force, (even if that had been claimable in these circumstances) in view of the other insurances, e.g. green flag and one other recovery organisation that are held.

In summer the French autoroute traffic radio (I think on 107.7) reports hourly bulletins in English - but I'm not sure whether this applies out of season.

The A75 is likely to be one of the places where you may run into trouble - but the route you're going should be fine. At the start of any 'Mountain Passes' you're likely to see signs indicating that the pass is open or closed.

I think the French may be better than us at keeping their roads open in adverse conditions. Friends were stuck on the A75 at Easter a few years ago - and couldn't be got out, but were supplied with blankets and hot food by the emergency services.

Thanks Val A for your post - much appreciated. Since posting mine, I've also seen Gafferbills link to the French webcams (you know the old saying "When all else fails, read the instructions !") and I'm old enough to be still absolutely amazed at this internet thing. Is there a page where I can find a do-it-yourself brain transplant?

Thanks, peeps, for the info - much reassured after seeing the

French webcams. First time of doing this long North European (i.e. Zeebrugge) journey, having previously done the long ferry to Bilbao/Santander on several occasions. Change of venue this year - previously Mojacar area, now to be Mazzaron area for two to three months.

I hope !

Have a good time Lesley - and report back on what you found when you come back. I think it's always helpful to read 'real' experiences - and after all that's what makes the internet so useful.
