As the majority of time we do not have electric hook up we are thinking of buying a TV that works on 12v. We've looked in caravan shops and they're very expensive but Argos have Roadstar TVD 1052 on offer. According to the blurb it is TV, DVD player and radio. Have read review in PC mag on portable TVs but would welcome any feedback anyone can give before we buy.

Hi Trisha, I bought the 10" Roadstar TV with video three years ago and it is a very good bit of kit, (DVD has taken over now), we keep it in the caravan and use it often. It works well on 12volt without too much drain on the battery. I think you have made a mistake in it having radio though but it will play CD's etc. the cost has dropped as I paid around

Thanks Tony

You're right it doesn't have a radio. Don't know where I got that idea from? It does have CD/DVD/MP3 playback though.

At the moment they're

Yes Trisha, you will be able to play your audio books on it provided they are on CD's, not cassette tapes. You say the price is now

Hi, I,m interested in the roadstar tv/dvd, but will it be any good when digital takes over. We want a tv for the van but I am wondring if it is worth the long term investment and buying digital. Sorry to be thick, but when the switchover happens does that mean that old tv,s won't work at home including portables. Denise

I've bought it. Picture is good both on status(Van) aerial and the little one that fits on top of the TV. As far as digital is concerned I may be wrong, but from things I have previously read on this forum I think I wll be able to use it with a freeview box. (I checked it does have SCART at the back.)

I keep saying I'm going to get a freeview box at home, but have never got around it it. Perhaps that's the next step ;-)

Thanks Trisha and Klarky, I may buy the roadstar if all it means is getting a freeview box as the lcd tv's with dvd are very expensive. Does that mean you have to get a freeview box for every tv set in the house!!! We don't have freeview as its not available in our area and we don't watch enough tv to warrant paying for sky. So basically then when the switchover happens you either need a ditigal tv, freeview box or sky. Thanks Denise

yes and no,you can use the 1 digibox on all tv's but it means disconnecting and reconnecting to another tv,its only a matter of unplugging and re connecting the cables.using splitters with digital tends to lose the incoming signal sometimes

We had the one with the video in and it was fine - bit heavy on power but the battery would last a couple of evenings if TV was onlt used a couple of hours. We have a solar panel which helped but a weeks use was too much.

We have recently replaced it with a 'drop down' TV DVD from www.in21now.com which uses less power.

Both work really well, so it depends on your purse and usage.

We have had the Roadstar with DVD for a couple of years now. it plays DVD's and CD's- not sure about the other things. As we are usually in a pub without hu, the 12v bit works ok. However, as the van has an Alde boiler, I have to top the battery up every 48 hours with a portable geny, so cannot say how long it will last on battery.
