Hello Forum,

Has onyone experienced problems with Roof Mounted Cycle Carriers? During the recent hot weather my cycle carrier failed and my cycle fell over causing denting and scratching to the roof of my car. Fortunately the wheel clips prevented the cycle from completely detaching. I was on the motorwaty at the time and dread to think of the consequences had this happened.

Damien, I use Thule carriers to carry three bikes on the roof of a CRV which itself is fitted with a Honda roof bar system.

I have carried them for thousands of miles, some of it in France when very hot and at autoroute speeds of 90kmph or so, and they have been secure and caused no problems at all. The biked are retained by straps for each wheel plus the clamp up to the frame

We have had one fail on one occasion, and like you it tipped off sideways and scratched the car, but didn't come off completely. It did buckle the bike wheel and happened when a very large articulated lorry passed us at speed on a single carriageway (A15 - notorious blackspot). We bought new ones (paddy hopkirk) and since then no problems, although, think we're due for some more as they do get a lot of use!

Damian, could you see what had failed? Was it the gripper that fits round the frame or the locking mechanism?
