Route through Chartres

I would appreciate any advice on thebest route through or araound Chartres.

Internet route finder sets the route as through what appears the centre of town on the N 154. It does seem the more direct route than the ring road to the west of the town but how suitable is it for towing along. I would rather have a few miles extra than drive through a narrow bottle neck of built up traffic.

I'm heading south from Rouen with first stopover at Salbris.

Thanks

Robert

Hi Robert, it's fine - just stick to the N154. We've just been through Chartres, both ways on the N154 without problems. There are no narrow bits, and no bottle necks. The same can't be said for Orleans, though - definitely worth taking two or three junctions on the autoroute, we did from Junction 12, down to the Orleans Sud junction, and then back off again on to the N154, same returning home.

Hi Val, Thanks.

Take your point about Orleans, I had intended going onto the A10 at junction 12 rather than go through the city centre.

Is the N20 southbound O.K. for towing through la Ferte St Aubin and Nouan le Fuzelier or do you think it best to stick with the A71 all the way to Salbris?

Robert

The road is generally no problem - and is very straightforward. As it's towards the end of your journey, and not particularly an expensive section, it might be worth sticking to the A71. However, they are both nice little towns, and we went both ways through the towns without any real problems. Obviously it's a bit slower - but then we're not in a hurry anyway.

Many thanks Val, you've been a great help not just tonight but previously with your maps detailing the route through Rouen.

I'll raise a glass to you next week in France (hopefully in the sunshine!)

Rob

I would just like to say that you have been given the best information you could get about this route.

I know I took Val A's advice about going through Rouen right down to Spain including Chartres and Orleans.

we never had the slightest problem all the way down.

Hi Rob,

it's worth taking note that when you come off the A71 at Salbris (J4), you go straight across roundabout (2nd exit) onto the ring road. Take the third exit at the next roundabout and that road will then take you through Salbris. Campsite is signposted on right.

Do not attempt to go the other way through Salbis because it's too narrow for caravans.

Regards

Mark W

Just to clear up confusion,'the other way' which Mark refers to doesn't mean the N20, which is perfectly wide enough for vans, but the (yellow) D724 which you could use to go into Salbris from Junction 4 if you were driving a car rather than car/caravan combination.
