route to lake Garda

Hi all we are off to lake Garda in july and are wondering which is the best route to take, through Switzerland or down through Germany and over the brenner pass.We are leaving from calais, does anyone have any thoughts on this

many thanks

Andy

As we live in th North we sailed Hull Zeebrugge and went down through Belgium and Luxembourg. It was cheaper as it was all toll free thus far! We stayed in Strabourg first night and then from ther went across into Germany and then Switzerland, stopping again at Lake Sempacher. The final leg was through the St Gotthard tunnel and via Italian Autoroute to Milan and Brescia where we left the Autoroute for San Felice del Benaco. On the way back we crossed from Switzerland to France and stopped in Colmar and then Bruges. It may not have been the shortest route but we tried to visit different places on both journeys so that it made it part of the holiday. Hope this helps. Where abouts Garda you heading for?

We went to Venice from Calais two years ago. went via Metz , Basel but had to wait 3-4 hours to get thru St Gottard tunnel.(Plus in switzerland you have to buy a vignette for both car & van plus the sites in Switzerland were very expensive.) This was mid week.Other on the site had the same problem. We returned via Bremmer pass and it was amuch better route

We did exactly that route last year, albeit camping, but we may repeat with a 'van in a year or two.

If you are not in a hurry, go though Belgium to Lux and stay at Kockelscheuer to the south of the city, then into Germany and stop at Camping Tenda near Russelheim, and finally into Austria and the Brenner Highway into Italy. This will bring you down the east side of Garda. The only charge will be for the Brenner Highway, but beware you will need plenty of pull as it is quite steep in places.

When you have landed, leave the car at Descenzano station and go to Verona and Venice by train - Venice takes two hours and costs about a fiver each way.

hi we live in northern germany and went to lake garda bella italia with our caravan. we also stayed at the camping tenda then went down the brenner pass. we have done the brenner pass twice now and reckon it is fine.
