I have far too many rucksack but a favourite of mine is the Berghaus Freeflow 35 slightly bigger than the one reviewed. It's firm frame keeps it off of your back so avoiding that awful cold sweaty area where most rucksacks rest on you. I am 6ft4inch tall so it's also useful to have it adjustable for length too. Which means I can use it with the hip strap actually on my hips. Adjusted to minimum length I can use it to meet airline overhead locker sizes. It's been touring all over the world with me and regularly to the Beacons and Black Mountains. Why don't I bin all of my others then? Can't answer that one.

I do wonder why 'pack frames' went out of fashion? ....( they were all the rage in the 70's, replacing the traditional 'bergen' army style packs). I personally found the frames perfectly comfortable for medium-to--heavy backpacking loads, and traveled many miles with my CampTrails pack.

These days I tend to use a fairly large (and very cheap) day-pack from TK-Max.

Many rucksacks still have a frame but it's not so obvious as the ones that you are referring to. Two of my other Berghaus and the Freeflow 35 have frames. But many people seem to prefer ones without as the sit closer on the body. These designs emanated from climbing sacs. One advantage is the you can sling them in a car boot and they pack away more easily when empty. They also can seem better either as overhead flight luggage or in the planes hold.

We bought a small rucksack from Carrefour for €19.00 and it get used for carrying out stuff when on a ferry to France or Spain. Also has the dogs bowls ets in it. Very comfortable and well made for the price we paid.

I know very very little about caravanning being a newbie but am an experieced all season Lake District fell walker.. I have an Osprey Kestrel 48 and Osprey Stratos 26 as my rucksacks of choice... Great strapping and can carry a heavy load that transfers the weight through your body so you can`t really feel it... Both sacks were above the £75 mark but in my opinion well worth it.. Osprey are a rucksack specialist and have plenty of smaller sacks and are well worth a look at.
