Hi all,
Being a long term user of Thetford products I recently thought I would try the above product and got round to giving my toilet cassette a clean, following the written instructions precisely. This included adding warm water, shaking the tank and leaving the product to stand for 16 hours minimum, with the sliding closure plate slightly open (to prevent a possible build up of pressure).
In order to leave the closure plate open for that 16 hour period, I opened the plate soon after shaking the tank.
As I slid the plate open I was sprayed with a pink frothy substance which came out of the tank with such force that it covered the side of my face, neck and head before spraying up the walls and ceiling of the utility room.
Fortunately I had my face turned to one side otherwise I would have ended up with it in my mouth and eyes (Not a pleasant thought).
After I spent ages cleaning up, I read and re-read the instructions and still can't tell what went wrong.
I have also spoken to a caravanning friend at work who has used the product without any problems at all.
Rather disturbingly, the bottle contained no safety information regarding skin or eye contamination and no hint that this reaction was possible, otherwise I would have done the cleaning outside and worn appropriate eye protection and clothing.
The label lists the contents, which sound fairly innocuous, so I may have worried for nothing: -
Fragrance, Limonene, Preservatives: 2-bromo-2-nitro propane-1, 3-diol and 2,6-dimethyl-1, 3-dioxin-4-yl acetate. (Are there any Chemists able to translate ?)
I Emailed Thetford customer services the same day and got the automatic "Your Email will be responded to within 24 hours".
I chased them up after a week of no response, which got me an Email, from which it was obvious that the person asking the questions had little or no experience of the product.
I responded to that Email 5 weeks ago and was hoping for an answer before posting this topic, however the silence has been deafening.
If I do receive an answer from Thetford I will post it on my return from holiday in a couple of weeks.
In the meantime please be aware that this reaction "could" occur and at least take the precaution of wearing eye protection.
Ken.
PS. The cassette tank was immaculate after using the cleaner.
