Safety warning on tyre pressure gauge.

I've just bought anew Ring RTG tyre pressure gauge to try and encourage my daughter to check her tyres regularly. Lets just saythat she left school some 25 years ago and totally relies on others, or dashboard lights, for vehicle checks. So any way as one does I read the instructions for the new gauge and was justa little surprised that under the Safet heading there was advice to to use the gauge while the vehicle is moving. Am I missing something here?

It's probably sold to our American cousins, and it seems that if they're not told something they can sue. We seem to be following them judging by all the ambulance chasing adverts on TV and the number or spam emails that I get regarding accident claims that I haven't had and PPI that I haven't hed either!

I'd love to see someone try to use a tyre pressure gauge on a moving vehicle. I can't imagine even the average American being that distanced from reality. The avarage Saudi, maybe..

The warnings are often for the americans where the lawyers have an annnual competition for the most outragous award of damages obtained. The winner one year was to the lady driver of a Winnebago who put the thing in cruise control and got up to make herself a sandwich assuming the motorhome would drive itself. needless to say it ran off the road and hit a tree. She won her case on the basis that the handbook should have warned that in cruise control you still have to steer it.

I am surprised that any one believes that urban legend. See here.

hi all,
Previous posters seem suprised by the warning given but I'm not and it's not just a stoooopid thing,
H&S rules clearly state that if a perceived hazzard can be identified, sufficient warnings must be given so as to eliminate the possibility of injury caused by the identified hazzard,
in other words if something can cause injury even if miss used a warning should be given, similar to the instruction not to incinerate a gas cannister even when empty ect,
Senario cleaner mops floor, someone slips on wet floor, "cleaners fault" succesfull claim for injury,
however cleaner put out big yellow sign CLEANING IN PROGRESS WET FLOOR "slippery when wet" someone slips on wet floor
"no claim" as the person who slipped was negligent for ignoring the warning sign,

I have the detailed sheet of the years winners and some of the others defy belief including one where a parent let his child run wild and then tripped over him and sued the store for failing to control his own child and won.

One has to admit that the lists can be very inventive, however what is amazing is that some are actually true as some people are just plain stupid!

The only thing that surprises me about ambulance chasing lawyers who drive everyones insurance premiums up is that they haven't yet encouraged anyone to sue by claiming that they tripped over the sign

yes I see your point

but H&S is quite specific, unless the person in question was blind (different senario) it comes under a different set of rules, ie disabled access, it is hard to see how a ambulance chaser could make a succesfull claim, rememer these firms only take on cases where there is a 90% chance of winning,
now if the sign fell on to your head,

different story,

Some of the signs are so small that people do trip over them, a dcepartment store manager did confirm that to me and several firms have upped the size of the signs so I suspect there is a claim or two out there.

Given the size and shape of the pressure gauge I can think of a number of ways in which I might hazard myself with the article. Some possibly quite pleasurable. But seriously we should not get confused with the legal requirements of Health and Safety as embodied in the Health and Safet at Work Acts aimed at preventing serious injuries and deaths, and the multitude of practitioners who use health and safety as a get out clause with no legal bearing. Yes one does have to assess risk but I very much doubt that any of the 'safety' practitioners actually do anything other than look for hazards without properly assessing the probability or consequences. And this lack of objective and professional consideration irks me.
