Santa Fe or Freelander 2

Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRDTi auto or Land-Rover Freelander 2 2.2D auto, which is better? Towing up to 1600kg would account for just 20% of total use.

Ignore off-road abilities, the furthest we'll go off-road is wet grass on-site.

Long-term ownership costs, say 10 years, and direct running costs are more important than minor differences in purchase price.

Constructive opinions welcome, put contentious posts elsewhere, please!

Thanks Clive, thats very helpful, particularly the comparisons of interior space. The rear knee room and boot length are significantly different across the cars tested.

If you value on road performance then the FL2 has to win. If you want bangs for your bucks then probably the Hyundai. They are very different combination, one is a budget family 4x4 the other is a premium SUV. If room isn't an issue then I would say go for the better driving car, but you aren't going to get much of a deal on one for a while. What about some of the estates with all wheel drive, if you don't need offroad performance why carry all the extra gubbins around?

Room is very much an issue, but without the costs of a premium vehicle. I need to get "chunky" adults in the back, with the front seats fully back for even bigger adults. I also need a large volume of covered "boot", for security. I had always thought of the Volvo V70 as a large car but the rear seat and "boot" are too snug for my needs.

Discovery 3 - TDV6 auto combined fuel consumption is 27.2mpg, that's way out of my budget.

Hi haveing driven both they are well able to do the job but remember the Santa Fe comes with 5 years unlimited milage warranty, that is well worth considering.
