hi nigel, the santa fe your writer is using is an auto box and the kerb weight for this is 1893 not 1853 as stated its the manual that 1853.

Also your writer states that you need to fold the middle row of seats forward to get the rear seats ( 6 + 7 ) flat. i have never had to do this and i have owned the car from new so i just dont get it.

i have the same car in same colour, same auto box, with the 7 seats but a cdx not a cdx plus.

obviousley the correct information helps people choose a new car and the wrong information could put people off from buying it.

can your writer shed some light on this

The 40kg difference in kerbweight is hardly worth mentioning. Production tolerances are such that no two identically equipped vehicles will weigh the same, and identical equipment is rare in practice anyway. Variances of up to 100kg are not unusual.

lutz, but writing the wrong information could put people off buying the santa fe.

im my opinion if you are a writer you should know all the correct facts before publising. if there is a mistake after then really a message should have been put on this post.

ive bu,ped it up enough for nigel to see. he answered the other one why not this one.

Cheers

Unless you are talking about a specific car, 'facts' is a bit meaningless when you are talking about kerbweights. It would make sense to point out what the kerbweight of the actual car tested weighed, but this can only used be a guideline. It can't be used as a statement of fact to apply to all others.

Hi Jo Anne,

Yes you are correct that many people will use information from a magazine as a basis for making a short list of potential vehicles.

In practice a 40Kg error on an 1850Kg vehicles only represents a 2% difference, and that in the context of the caravans it might be asked to pull is not significant, and is unlikely to cause a change a choice of car or caravan.

As other have pointed out, the actual kerbweight of most vehicles is different to the nominal published figure any way so such differences are not uncommon. The only way to know an actual kerbweight is to weigh the car.

Of potentially more significance is the way the seats can fold. In my car, I cannot fold down the rear seat back without removing the head restraints; perhaps this is the same for the Santa-Fe.

Is it really such a big problem? Ok I have to juggle a bit but I can make the space I require, and it would be nice not to have to remove the restraints, but the outcome is more important than the method for me.

Purchasing a car is always going to involve some compromises. I don't think the differences you have highlighted are going to change many peoples choice of car or caravan.

As I have frequently pointed out, do not trust what is written on these forums, as virtually all of it is copied by hand from somewhere else, and mistakes do creep in to the information. Always check details with the data plates, or official documentation or the manufacturer

Caveat emptor - Buyer beware

I have to say that the constant assertion that production cars vary in kerbweight comes as a revelation to me and surely can't be true

If it was true then Popeye Doyle in the French Connection couldn't have found the concealed drugs by comparing the stated weight of the car with the actual weight and thus removing more panels to find the hidden packages

Could it be that American cars are built to higher tolerances or are we just being fooled by poetic licence??

Next thing we will be told that reindeer can't fly !!

Unles there were a couple of dozen hidden packages, each of them weighing considerable more than a standard brick, weighing the car and comparing it to kerbweight is not going to be conclusive.

john l, the third row of seats on the santa fe just fold down flat with a lift of a handle in the back of the seats. the second row do not have to be touched to do this unless proberbly you have been reclyning in the 2nd row of seats.
