Crusaders and M Polo did not have cars or Knaus caravans or even Bailey's.

So why do you need them Lutz ?

It wasn't meant to be a serious comment, Euro. Actually, I think they are a good idea even though I haven't got one and still rely on a well thumbed road atlas published back in the 70's.

I was also joking with you Lutz!

Satnav is not perfect, and I was a sceptic until I tried one. My son inlaw sent me off to Manchester a couple of years ago as he we had a call from his daughters school when we were on route. I dropped him at a station found with the Satnav and with a two minute explanation on Tom Tom use I followed the ladies instructions not having really any dea where I was going.

To the door I went and found my way around the busy city that I would have been floundering with if I had used a map trying to navigate and read.

Exploring Naples for a day we had no idea which direction the car was in but satnav knew where we were all though we didn't, and knew where the car was and most direct route back was easy.

My wife and I sometime spend a day cycling at home in the hills or forests and along tracks. Last year we spent one particular day cycling north of Royan on the coastal paths and forest trails. When completely lost late in the day and with no reference point to work out where we were on a map. I just clipped the Satanav on the handlebars and in 30 seconds it knew where we were and I could see on the road only based mapping where we were and the way to go.

If you were to be driven around for half a day with a bag over your head and were dropped in the middle of a forest with a map. Until you could work out where you were and compass points you would be lost and the map pretty useless.

Within seconds satnav will know exactly where you are and where the nearest Hospital or Restaurant is or a train station or taxi office.

We still carry maps and check routes against V Michelin or mappy, but the satnav works so well we rarely ever use them.

I've just got the Garmin Nuvi 310 deluxe and it's great. However, I can only download maps, not routes prepared on my PC using th software. Not sure why this is but if anyone can help I'd be grateful!!

I wished I had satnav last summer when tryin to get to & from Jablines camp site near Disney. Got lost both ways because the road signing is so bad. Ended up going right round Paris the wrong way coming back. I bought a cheap PDA and GPS on eBay then put TomTom Navigater on it. What a difference, it takes us where we want to go by the best route.

It doesn't have the new roads off the N136 near Rennes but if you follow the signs, it soon puts you right again.

It's specially good in cities. On our annual visit, we used to drive into Southampton from the airport on the motorways. The satnav takies us by the route the taxis use.

We live in the Channel Islands so can only use it on holiday, but still think it's worth the expense and I would recommend them to everyone.

As for the type, I think they're all good so try before you buy if you can.

There's loads of info & advice here http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/ especiaally on the forums.
