I am thinking about purchasing Humax HD freesat reciever- are they suitable for caravaning and what are they like to set up??

The only problem i have found is the sound goes out of syncronisation with the picture which i have to adjust on the settings.(bit of a pain all the while,thinking of changing it .Dont have this problem on my reciever at home)

We've used the Humax HD receiver for a couple of years now in UK and France without any problems,what I have found however is an alternative method of finding the Freesat satellite at the different locations that is faster and easier than explained in the receiver handbook.What we did was tune in the receiver at home and stored the TV channels.Then at site after connecting up, select a TV channel on the receiver (we usually select BBC 1, channel 101) and find the satellite using the usual pointing method.
When the satellite is found the BBC 1 picture immediately appears on the screen,the advantages of this method are -
1.No update time delay by the receiver
2.You know you have found the correct satellite
We have used this method method with 100% success in the UK,France and Belgium

I purchased a 'Free Sat' Satallite receiver. I found it a little 'testing' to set up to be honest. (we've got a Sat finder mind, though you need to see which way the locals Dishes are facing for an idea of the signal)
I had to ask the locals what Satillite was being used in their area. A little bit of a nightmare to get it set up and when I did eventually get it setup, there were 100's of channels, 90% of which were foreign (perhaps I'd set it up wrong ?) and useless.
I did get around 4 BBc 1's, several HTV's mind. But I was always nervous about leaving the Sat Dish out when when we were out for the day too as it cost around £150.00 all in. A neighbour as told me, that I'd get all the channels that you normally use by using your caravan arial anyways ?? Infact I've been told, you don't need to change the anologue arial on your van roof (if you van is slightly old, ours is a 2003) you can get away with the receiver box being changed in your cupboard and thats it, this allows your van arial to pick digital signals up ?? (I've not pursued that mind to be honest)

I have used another reciever on same set up and sound is fine, but the other box is not HD .I always get the max signal when setting up ,i use a signal strength meter and also look on screen menu.I have even put the box on my home dish and it does the same,whereas my home box is fine.Will be buying another LG box for caravan use.
My setup is a Sky one.
About 6/8 years ago Sky was selling a system for £150 with a card for your area, card replacement every 5 years and free. They came and set it up in the house all registered and away we go.
Right bought a new dish and fixings, LNB, cable and a heavy speaker stand from Maplin with tripod base made of aluminium. Removed the box from out the house put it in van fitted it all together, with a compass check where the satalite is ( east of south ). With the telly on and setup on the screen I move the dish slowly untill my signal strength and signal quality are as far to the right as possible and away we go. I have used this setup all around the country including Scotland. Only problems are buildings and trees is the line of the satalite, but with a long cable or extension I have overcome the problems. Its just the matter of unpluging and returning the box to the house for use there.Never counted how many channels we have but it must be 100+.The card we have covers our area and we do not have to retune anywere in the country to get our local programs.

We have Humax's HD Freesat decoder and find it excellent.
I read here that someone has problems in finding which satellite the 'locals' are using, which of course is the same cluster anybody anywhere using 'Freesat' is using , it unlike Freeview does not need retuning or redirecting to get a signal. If you dont want to use it for 'Freesat' channels but for decoding foriegn satellite channels then that is a different matterand not one I have explored, I simply use it for 'Freesat'.

We have the Humax HD Foxsat receiver which we have use with a Maxview 66cm dish for sevreral years. We have got excellent reception all over the UK and in northern and southern Brittany. We recently upgraded our TV to a Avtex HD and are now enjoying an improved HD picture
I would recommend the Humax box very highly.
