caravan service

When I bought a 13 years old caravan, I found some items were in fact not serviced or properly serviced by professional as service checklist mentioned. I decide to do service myself. Some insurance companies require annual professional service, and other not, just mention caravan must be in roadworthy condition or in good state of repair. I don't see any damages to be covered are related to roadworthy condition. Has anyone's claim been denied for DIY service or for bad state of repair?

The CAMC Super Cover says any caravan over 5 years old must be serviced annually by an AWS engineer. All the other covers beneath the Super cover don’t stipulate the same .

Like Clive in practice I’ve never seen such an issue as described on here or any other forum
Also a number of people on here do their own annual servicing.
The most important thing is be clear you are compliant with your insurers requirements

I found 10+ years caravans had service gap in last few years, dealer told me they were serviced by owners or maybe the owner skipped service

Its a very common clause applied by insurers to cars. Its a get out for them if, after a crash, its found that there was a serious defect on say the suspension, or the brakes etc. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I've never had a clause in my car insurance that required professional maintenance - usually just requires the car to be maintained in a roadworthy condition.

Some DIYers work to a higher standard than some workshops, including some franchised dealers!

I mean some caravan insurance companies require annual professional service. In fact, once caravan is 10 years old, some owners don’t do service every year or do partial service.

Are you considering a running gear service or full service. Depending on usage some have a service every two years, but have the experience to check areas over. But of course areas such as gas, carbon monoxide etc require specialist kit and knowledge. So what areas are insurers looking to have covered? Some dealerships offer running gear services, or full services. So how do they align with insurers requirents?

My first caravan got a one year warranty so never had a professional service in the 17 years we had it - my second caravan had a three year warranty so only had the first two services done professionally in the 12 years we had it - both caravans were however maintained to a high standard including a check for gas pressure loss every trip (the Gaslow gauge on the regulator didn't drop in several hours after turning the gas off).

If you plan to maintain your own caravan, properly of course, just choose an insurer that doesn't require professionally maintenance.

Swifts own insurance only states that they advise a caravan to be serviced annually and not by whom does it. As Roger our first caravans from 1970’s only had a 12 month warranty so never ever see a dealer. When later caravans had 3 year warranties had 2 services done with dealer and then done by myself. Being a Mechanical/ Electrical Engineer also Gas Qualified I have all the test equipment required to safely service a Caravan, Our present caravan bought new in 2023 has seen dealer twice and now serviced myself, although now up in my 80’s. I am not bothered about maintaining the 10 year Body warranty as Swift Caravans Bodies are built with rot proof materials even if there was a leak.

Now what's needed is how road users can predict any damage sustained from chronic lack of road surface maintenance once a yearly safety check has been undertaken
