Hi, can someone give me some advice re the 'satellite system in a suitcase' type things on the market, (starting at around £65). We have an old 240/12v portable analogue tv and a omnidirectional aerial that came fitted with the van and struggle to get a decent picture (or one at all in some areas). We're thinking of buying one of these dishes so that we can pick up the freeview channels but how good have people found the reception? The alternative is to buy a pole mounted digital aerial and use a digibox but we won't be able to use that on 12v or we buy a new 12v freeview tv but then we still have the aerial problem? These dishes seem to be the cheapest and easiest answer but are there any drawbacks? Thanks for your help

Hi tracy.

The satellite dishes are for freesat and not freeview, the answer may be to buy a freeview tv in which case it will probably have a dvd player built into it.

You will still have to get a digital arial to get the pictures you want but I think you will find it really worthwhile in the end.

Dont forget that with freeview you will need to re-tune the tv on every site that you vist, but that only takes a couple of minutes.

Regards ob.

Thanks for your help. How many channels can be picked up with freesat? I thought it picked up all the freeview channels plus a few extra?
Hi tracy.

You are correct it does all of the freeview channels and more besides, I am not sure how many because I have never counted them.

Regards ob.

Hi Tracy,

we were in the same position as you, omnidirectional aerial, poor picture most of the time.

I decided to go Satellite rather than digital terrestrial and am glad I did. I didn't buy the kit in a suitcase but I gather it works very well.

My setup which includes dish, tripod, receiver, cabling etc. cost around

I bought an outfit from Melksham Satellites (Google) which is a 54cm dish which folds folds flat into its supports. Although not in a a suitacse it has its own holdall and it is very light and picks up in S of France. I find the in-built spirit levels quite useful. Worth having a look at.

I have a big aeiral, freeview box, analoge tv & now a sat in suicase system. With all that I am always going to get some sort of picture lol. The sat system is the most valuable to me though. The only time this doesnt work is when tall trees are in the way but i've never failed to get a signal yet touch wood. BTW the lidl sat suitcase reciever works on 12v as well as mains.
