Sealant change after 5 years

Hi I was discussing with Damian on this site about longevity of

seals (sealant) and just wondered how many of you actually renew

your sealant and at what period ? How much does it cost ? I must admit I have never thought of renewing after 5 years but maybe I should consider this to try and stave off the dreaded possible leak factor.

It really depends on what sealant is used and is it being used in a location that flexes a lot. Is not realy and answerable question.

I kept an earlier van [Castleton] 11 years and it was never resealed nor was there any reason to.

If a van needs resealing every 5 years I would most certainly buy a different make.

Hi Steve.

We have a 25 year old caravan which I have not fully re-sealed, but I have re-sealed the near side awning rail which as you can imagine has had a lot of abuse from regular awning attatchment.

The sealant I used is an industrial strength silicone which has 35% elasticity and an expected life span of 30 years. It works very well, and being transucent in colour, is hardly noticable.

I must admit, if a manufacturer recommended resealing after 5 years I'd drop his vans like a hot potatoe.

My sealant is made by Everbuild building products at Leeds. 0113 2403456.

It is Premium 335.

Steve L.
