Towing at the moment with a ford focus 1.8 ghia estate (petrol)

Have been looking at upgrading to a Mondeo 2.0L TDCI, not new but about 2 or 3 years old. Why is it that every one that we go and look at has had extensive body work or is very high mileage.(Thus being very tatty!!!) The ford dealers want way too much for theirs, and are offering way too little for ours.

Started looking at focus estate (diesels) wife is very attached to the spec on ours and is relucent to part with her car,must be equal to a ghia!!! Limited budget. Help!!! Any recomendations?? Living in south of England, towing a Lunar Zenith four, going to France in August and just slightly concerned that we may be on our tow limit (2 kids and all the apparell etc!!) Couldn't travel light if we were made of feathers!!

Any advice VERY welcome.

Simon, You dont say what weights etc you want to tow but until last year I had the Mondeo 2.00ltr TDI manual I towed a weight of around 1350kg very comfortably.

The fuel consumption is very good beating my wifes Fiesta 1.4(solo) hands down at average 47mpg I cant tell you what the towing economy was because I never measured this. This car is very roomy inside with a massive boot space and much more with seats down. Towing was very stable and comfortable given my above towing weight. It was just a tad tricky to move off which could be more so on a gradient and on grass/gravel you can spin the front wheels if you are not careful. If was not very good for reversing especially on a slope and I cooked the clutch a couple of times rear view vision is not to good however notwithstanding this it is an excellect family car both towing and solo you wont regret getting one. just be patient and keep looking, mine was prime for a 5 year old and I only got a pittance in part ex.

Just a word of advice regarding the TDCi engines Simon. Some of the early ones 2001/2002 had problems with premature injector failure which is costly to put right. I think by the age you're looking at Ford had solved these issues with better injectors but worth asking if they have been changed.

hi simon i tow with a 2004 tdci 130bhp and it tows fantastic and with the van on the back a avondale golden avocet L still manages to report 42mpg the van weighs 1250 so is near enough an exact 85% match had no problems on hills pulls like a train its the 6 speed model so if your looking at 1 id say go for it as theres not many family oriantated hatchbacks or saloons as good in my opinion
