Could you please advise me on a securing problem I have with my single axle caravan. The van comes with a securing aid where you put a pin through the quadrant in the wheel to stop it turning. I need to jack the van up once it is in position, to line up the quadrant and this is where my problem come from. On letting the jack down the van roles forward about four inches "off" the jack ( very dangerous ) why dose it role forward when I let the van down? I need the hand brake off to be able to turne the wheel, why should it slew forward?

Does this only happen after you have reversed onto your pitch, if so it is because you have dissengaged your caravan brakes when you reverse. To get round this reverse past where you want to be, then pull forward a couple of foot this should engage your brakes again.

If this does not help you will need to chock your wheels.

Best of luck.

Thank you for that Graham. This is where I keep my van, at home on my flat and level hard standing, and I put it there with my mover traveling forward. I only just get it inside between the gate and end wall, this is why I can't move it back or forward once it is in and so I have to jack it up to aline the locking device. The other side of the van is against a fence, so I can't get to that to chock the wheel. Do I apply the hand brack and release it when the wheel is up so that I can turn it or do I not apply the hand brack to start with.

Hi,

This is a hard one. You need to apply the brakes before lifting the van, but once the wheel is raised you must becarfull that the van does not rotate. Keep some one at the jockey wheel and then lower the legs on the raised side, release the brake & fit your lock, apply the brake, raise the legs & then lower the jack. But be careful when the van ia raised that it does not rotate on the jockey wheel.

Is it possible to to fit a hitching post at the front of the van, or a tow ball to the wall, you could attach the van then it would not move, after wards you could lock the van to it using a hitch lock giving you more security.

Graham.

Hi again Graham, Thank you for your reply, I did not see it as there are still only two replies on the page. Yes it is a hard one and I will try and do as you suggest, although is is a lot to do with a bit of luck thrown in. I will let you know how I get on. Thank you again.
