Just back from Cornwall after a 3 day shakedown in preparation for the 6 week France trip. All worked well. Weather really great ( got sunburn walking) and everything in and on the van worked a treat. Unbelieveably quiet on the campsite(Gwithian). Only prob was the noise from the rear wheel bearings on the car. I have replaced both rear bearings ( Ford Mondeo TDCi Estate 2006) but they are still noisy. The old ones had play and 'rumbled' but these just whine. I wonder if it's anything to do with the spring assisters I fitted. The back end now sits just right and the car and van look nice and level with about 65 Kg noseweight. The van tows great and all fine at just under 60mph with 31 mpg. Will have top box and bikes for the coming trip but worry about the noisy bearings. Should I just turn the stereo up??

We have a 2006 Mondeo Estate, fitted with spring assisters, but no whine from the wheels/bearings/anywhere else! Like Forest Gump says, I would have another look at the problem, or get a mechanic to have a look, as the last thing you want is a problem in France.

Agree with the Gump ...... Get it sorted before you go abroad.......

Have you checked your rear tyres for even wear & to see if they have become scaloped on the insde ?.
You could try swapping the back one to the front & see if you still have the noise.

Tried it today after we got back and it still does it. No abnormal wear on tyres. Think maybe just cheap bearings. will check for play again tomorrow.

Our Mondeo's rear axle moans a bit, more of a whir whir sort of thing. If they are new bearings, are they the sealed type? In my experience, they go on for years/miles like that. Think I'd get a second opinion tho' !

Thanks for all your helpful advice.
Spoke to my friendly tyre fitter and he advised changing the tyres round.
So yesterday I jacked it up and swapped tyres diagonally. Whilst doing that I noticed thet the n/s rear had uneven wear - more on inside than out but even all round. refitted and road tested and noise has transferred from rear to front (tho not as bad). I figure that with cornering it will soon even itself out.
I agree that whining bearings often go on for years before anything happens but it was driving me mad and I'll have enough to think about in Spain/France without that.
They are sealed bearings, not expensive or difficult to change. Car has done 90k miles. The nearside rear I have changed twice, once for noise and once for play. Last year I badly overheated the rear brakes going over the pass into Italy. When we got back I noticed the brake slave cylinder leaking and the bearing throwing grease. Shall know better this year :)
Just the mover to fix now and pack and sort the garden and 10 days to go. Thanks again.

I had a Mondeo that had more noise than my previous one and the rear tyres had worn on the inside. I had a four wheel alignment check which showed adjustment needed. That cured the noise and swoping tyres allowed the uneven wear to be removed.

I hope you have taken out red pennant from the CC or the C&CC equivelent. We Have just got back from our 6 week, nay 7 week trip round Spain & Morocco. Our car which had been running like a dream had a starter motor go in Morocco,& injecter failier in Spain. Red pennant picked up the car & took it to The Garage (citroen main agent) & took us & the caravan to a campsite in Madrid & arranged car hire. The Garage said it needed a new engine & quoted €7800 for repaires, which meant the car was an uneconomical repair as its value is aprox £1700 & normally would have had to be either repaired at huge costs or left in Spain. How ever Red pennant took the car & caravan to Santander & put us on a campsite for 3 days until the next Ferry was available .ThenBrought both the car & van home to Kent.where I eventually bought a secondhand engine & had it fitted for a grand sum of £1300 Not mainy car based breakdown services would have done that
I would never go abroad without breakdown cover from one of the caravan clubs as their cover is designed with caravaners in mind
PS I also have Brittania premium which is supposed to cover in the EU,but they were unable to fully cover the incident
