We have purchased a Shogun LWB 3.2 diesel 'Field', which we should pick up in the next few days. We bought it because our Mondeo was underpowered for towing our van and the price seemed very good in relation to the more desirable 4 x 4's, such as Discovery or Touareg.

Its a 56 plate auto with only 15K on clock and cost £ 14K. Would welcome any observations. (Too late now really, we've bought it).

Brilliant towcar - I have a 2000 GDI SWB, tow anything anywhere.

Mines a petrol, because I'm an incurable fan, but the dismal will tow just the same.

Is yours an Auto? The Steptronic boxes on these cars are a dream for towing. I use the manual selector and cruise on motorways and the control for hills and overtaking is efortless!

Just done a 500 mile round trip to Cornwall towing 1.5 t and the fuel computer reads 21.3 MPG - a 3.2 should be marginally better but of course DERV is more pricey.

You won't regret the change believe me.

I have towed with the earlier 2.8 diesel engine (manual) and then later with the 3.2 Elegance auto box. All my vans have been big twin axle models between 1700 and 1900 kgs. Never once was either vehicle even remotely tested. Long hard slogs up steep hills were effortless. Absolutely brilliant tow cars. The 3.2 though had a tendancy to run away with you on motorways in particular. The speed crept up very quickly if you wern't careful.

Thanks for the replies. We only have a light van (1250 kg loaded) but good to know we can trade up to a heavier one in the future.

Hi Jo

I have had one for 8 years, recently changed to a 55 plate, towing a Charisma TA, you don't even know its on the back, unless of course some idiot overtakes too dam close.

Plenty of get up and go, if I were to say it had a fault for towing, that would be the turning circle.
