I collected a used shogun lwb yesterday and had a go at towing my 510 dart. Tows like a dream after my 1800 mondeo. There is a sticker inside the drivers door which says that 4wd should be engaged when towing. Does anyone know why, and is it essential?

Thanks

I imported a 3.2 pajero some years ago and towed my twin for two years with no problems I didn't have a sticker, but then last year someone posted on the pajero owners club about it, I asked there why we needed to and someone replied that in two wheel it put's two much pressure on the rear diff, I don't know wheather this is actual fact or not, but to be honest unless I am towing in places like the alps I don't put it in 4 wheel drive.

Thanks very much. I guessed they were being a bit OTT, and we only have a lightweight van anyway.

Jo,

In short, you must use 4wd for any towing. It tells you on the vehicle sticker and also as a caution note in the handbook.

The reasons are to do with the transmission electronic controls and the risk you may overheat the rear axle.

I suspect that for a light van the instruction may be overkill but I always tow in 4H on my GDI even when I'm using my light "garden Trailer"

If the manufacturer says do it then who are we to argue and particularly in terms of invalidating warranties or breaking expensive bits!

Incidentally, Shoggies drive and handle better in 4WD and the increase in fuel consumption seems minimal.

there is no conection at all with you,re water pump failing whilst in 4 wheel drive.

more than likely you,re water pump was about to go anyway and you,ve just put the 2 together.
