we have a vauxhall monterey 3.1 td (same as a trooper.we are thinking of changing it in the future.we need your input into mpg around town, towing, motorway.

what do you think of your shogun?.

I pull a large twin axle 'van with a 2004 3.5 V6 Shogun. It passes everything on the road other than a petrol station.

Seriously...It only tows at 14 MPG with 18 MPG solo.

I am unhappy with its stabillity when towing, it constantly feels like there is always a strong cross wind. I am trying to get my dealer (who admit to having no knowledge of towing) to refer me to Mitsubishi technical department with very little success. To ring Mitsubishi customer services is a complete waste of time.

PS. My Shogun is currently in a dealership awaiting parts (fault with a rear drive shaft). It may be mobile for whitsun.

I have owned a Shogun 3.0 V6 petrol and two 3.1 TD Troopers - I currently tow with a Bighorn.

My Shogun did about 18mpg towing , it averaged about 21mpg solo. It could not quite manage the stability of the Trooper nor the power when towing and the Troop has the edge on economy.

I have no experience of the modern "unit construction" Shoguns but swopping a 3.1 Troop for the older style Shogun would be a retrograde step in my opinion.

My advice FWIW would be to look for a Toyota Landcruiser [5door not SWB] Colorado 3.0 TD [or the import equiv.]. You will have a very comfortable 'car-like' ride nearly 30mpg solo - 25/26 towing and that is with an Automatic. Very well built and reliable, but also a great workhorse and trouble free - that is my experience after trying many other 4x4s

I have the 3.2DID. Shogun albeit a swb but can honestly say I have no problems regards towing my van. Solo on M/Way driving can return 35/36 mpg, and towing its approx 25/26. and round about the houses is somewhere in between. Ive heard all sorts of stories about the swb not being recommended for comfort,but as far as Im concerned its great tug and every day vehicle also. Im not suggesting you are looking at the swb, but I just thought I would give my view on them anyway.

We had a swb 3.1 Trooper (Bighorn) last year, but it was too heavy on fuel (got 15 to the gallon returning from The Highlands to Northampton - ouch!), but also costing a couple of hundred pounds in repairs each month, so it had to go.

We now have a 3 litre diesel Toyota Surf, 1994 import. Very different motor, much more refined engine and more powerful, but we get around 28 solo and 22 towing, which we can live with.
 
Jo, you could try the Mitsubishi Pajero Owners Club web site. A good site, and Im sure you will get loads of info there.
 
Hi, we have one of the Shoguns that you missed, 3.2 LWB diesel manual,this replaced our old Range Rover, the difference is amazing, Shogun tows in 5th gear most of the time, only need to change down for hills or slower traffic,before buying the Shogun we tried Discovery, broke down on test drive, and Sorrento, which drove very well but felt small inside after Shogun, also some of the inside trim felt flimsy. We would recommend the Shogun but only the diesel for reasons of economy, our is 02 reg and had 27000 miles when we bought it in 2004, only things we have had to replace so far, a set of front brake pads.

We also have a 2002 Shogun 3.2 SWB DID the same as geordie and fully agree with all his comments.We tow a 1300 kg Avondale and have never had any problems with stability or lack of power infact exactly the opposite, we sometimes have to look to make certain the van is still on the back.

It has now covered 42,000 and we have had no problems at all. The only new parts have been front and rear brake pads.

We have towed to the South of France and Northern Spain and can honestly say that the comfort levels are second to none.

We have got a golden Mayfair 510 5 berth, which is an upgraded version of the dart.

I have never bothered too much about the mpg as I work on the theory of if you like the car and want the power and comfort you takes your chance! (as long as you can afford the diesel that is)

As far as I remember towing is about the mid twenties and solo the low thirties much as what geordie gets from his shogun.

hi nidge, thanks for the info.we have the dart 556/6 golden mayfair from raymond james.its our 1st van we thought why not go for it and we dont regret it at all.
 
hi,I drive a 1999 2.8td gls lwb shogun auto with a ranger 550/6,this is a super tow car and never had any problems.20+ when towing. cheers, doylie.
