In the past 7 weeks both front wheel bearings have failed on our 2002LWB Shogun,although this is the first serious(expensive) problem we have had in 10 years with the car,the mileage is 85000,just wonder whether anybody else has had a similar problem or whether it is common on that model Shogun.Also means we have had to cancel this weekend away as it will not be fixed in time.

Our towcar is a Pajero 2.8 which so far has been trouble free (touch wood) as was the SWB 2.5 Pajero that we had for 7 years before buying this on 2 years ago.
Have a look on the Pajero Owners Club forum and the members will be able to let you know if it's a common fault, but I don't think that it is.

Thanks for the link Parksy,I have had a look and posted a question,there is quite a bit about bearings,but failure doesn't seem common,once I have it fixed I am hoping the car will return to it's usual reliability.

........when you say the bearings failed.......who gave the diagnosis and was it just excessive play?
It is common for front wheel bearings to require adjustment on a 4x4 at or before that sort of mileage.
This is usually a fairly simple job taking about 2 hours at very little cost.
(note that I do not have direct experience of a Shogun)
You appear to have owned the vehicle for most of its life so should know of any abnormal treatment that may have caused a failure.
e.g. serious mud off roading or sea water imersion.

The right hand bearing was whining at MOT in January,but servicing garage said it was not something to be concerned about until it got worse,when it got worse it was replaced by them,last Saturday the left hand bearing,that had been checked when the right hand one was replaced,disintegrated and took out the abs sensor which wrapped itself into the cv joint. The car has been serviced and maintained by the same garage for the past 8 years and the only recent serious use in 4wd was during the snow in January/February. Not been used off road or in water in the time that I have had it.Spoke to the garage today and they are quoting in the region of £1200 inclusive to repair,claiming that most of the parts need to be Mitsubishi.The car does less than 8000 miles a year,so seriously thinking about getting rid of it and the wifes car and buying something else that she can use, and can tow our van as well.The garage say it needs wheel bearing,abs sensor,and cv joint,and the axle needs to be drained and refilled with oil,I am in a difficult positon as the car is in their workshop and they have already stripped out the damaged parts,so if they go ahead it will cost me a lot, and if I try to get it done cheaper elsewhere I will still get a bill from them for the work they have done so far.Worst bit was having to cancel this weekend away in the van,my hearing is suffering from OH complaining !

Seems a bit steep is it from a main dealer? There are suppliers of Shogun parts that has your garage tried Milners for example, but if they are a main dealer they can only supply OEM parts. Draining and changing front axle oil is a quick job. Find a local garage who will let you supply your own oil. Again Milners or Opie oils do correct oils at low cost.
At the end of the day even if you do have to spend £1200 you have a known low mileage reliable tow car. With the work not carried out what will you lose when selling it? Also to get something as good will cost you and then lose £1200 on depreciation the minute you complete the sale.

They are not a main dealer,they are an independant garage and we have used them regularly for our 6 vehicles,since my last post I have obtained 2 quotes from other independants,and they are just under £800 and just over £800 for the same work,I have also looked on internet and the main difference comes from the prices they are charging for parts,they are saying that they are using genuine Mitsubishi for most parts as pattern parts are not available.My added concern with regard to keeping or selling the Shogun is that it will not be long and the money spent on the car will be more than it is worth,I take the point that I know the car and until now it has been the most reliable tow car we have owned,so will wait and see what they say when the work is complete.Thank you for the pointer to Milners,will have a look at what they can do.

.......I am a believer in preventative maintenance so at 85,000 miles I would have changed both front wheel bearings at the same time.
From what you say that would have saved you a lot of bother and I would have expected a good garage to suggest this course of action.
I have a 2001 Nissan Terrano that has done 112000 miles and has only been serviced up until this year as there has been no failures.....just a few wear and tear items.
This Spring however that all changed and I have spent £1600 on the following work.......
New front brake discs and pads.
New water pump
New complete exhaust system
New Turbocharger
New clutch kit
New Antifreeze
New oil in gearbox, transfer gearbox, back and front axles
This has all been done DIY otherwise the cost would have been much more.
I intend keeping the vehicle anyway........but 4x4's of a certain age do start getting costly for repairs.

The oil and lub are normal prudent servicing and to manage costs you could have them done outside of services. The anti-freeze would need changing on most cars at 5 years or less. I change the anti freeze in our Nissan and Pajero every two years and the brake fluid in all cars at two yearly intervals. So in reality all Gafferbill has changed for 'prudence' is the water pump and turbo. But a turbo would normally go longer unless that model had a weakness and it was easier to change it than have a fault during a long trip. Even if you had a garage do this type of work it would still cost less than the "cost to change and depreciation" on a newer car which as I have already said could itself require some of the items to be carried out which may not come under warranty.
I supect that when the XC70 and Nissan Note have departed my drive the car that will remain will be the Pajero! Cheap for parts, reliable, go anywhere and no electronics,fuel consumption that's absolutely rubbish, but zero depreciation.

........yes my list contains parts that are just service items that were included as they were part of the £1600 total cost.
The water pump was a failure.....pool of antifreeze found under engine due to failed seal.... stopped me going on a CC rally.
The clutch was a failure whilst on a C&CC club site.....clutch plate separated from its splines causing sudden loss of drive.
Had to cut short trip and return home via Britannia Rescue.
Turbocharger had to be replaced due to leaking oil seals causing blue smoke from exhaust which was steadily getting worse and worse.
This gradual failure I am almost certain, was caused by a 5 mile trip to work and back during the cars first 7 years of life.
I have owned the car from new so know its history.
I am about to take my caravan to Belgium and France with the Terrano..... so I am hoping all goes well!

Thank you Gaffer Bill and Other Clive,I still do not have the Shogun back from repair,and having looked at future repair bills it seems that a discovery td5 is less expensive on parts and they are more readily avaialble,I know that if I go down the route of changing there is depreciation to consider,but I will be looking at an 04 discovery so depreciation is negligible and is tax deductable if bought through our business,I am still not sure about disco reliabilty,though. The garage have 'promised' the Shogun will be back on Monday and I think I will enquire as to the cost of doing the sort of replacements suggested by Gaffer Bill and consider the options then.
