Hi Margaret

This site is a fair way from bunree, but New England bay is a really nice site and is in the Stranraer area. And on the coast and ideal for bikes.

Or there is a site closer to bunree at Culloden close to the famous battle site near Inverness. Which is also good for bikes.

We are going to Bunree as well but not till August.

Dougie...........

apart from that the only other place i could suggest is at pitlochry. There is another place aswell but depends if you just want scenery or a near by town .... that would be Loch Lomond fantasic place not much about there but what there is is spectacular scenery and silence. some local pub do superb meals and there are very freindly

hi margaret, i live in an area that has countless caravan sites which are excellent and only an hours drive from home.

if you have a look at some of the sites which are in or around dumfries and galloway you will find plent which are on the solway coast, beatiful area and first class sites. starters for ten, castle carey at creetown, brighouse bay near twynnholm, auchenlearie near castle douglas. you wont be disappointed with any of them.

What about the CC site at Morvich, Glen Sheil. You can drive across to the Isle of Skye from Kyle of Lochalsh.

A nice day out is from Kyle by train to Inverness and back.

Ayr is by the sea and there are a few sites around their, a good one is Cragie Gardens 10 minute walk from centre of the town which is lovely and quiet little site and very well maintained.

Aviemore is stunning.

Loch Lomond is so tranquil, a good one we go to is Malorachy Bay (i'll check the spelling for you)

Whats your ideal kind of site?

Margaret, Bunree is a great site. We were lucky and had a lochside pitch there. The sunsets were fantastic. The Corran vehicle ferry is within walking distance from the site and there is an Inn on the other side of Loch Linnhe which serves good lunches. We didn't take bikes over, but it looked good for cycling.

It's not far from Bunree to Fort William, where we took the steam train over the Glenfinnan viaduct to Mallaig. We had a fish and chip lunch at Mallaig harbour and time for a walk around, before returning back to Fort William.

Incidentally, one the best views of Ben Nevis is from the Commando Memorial.

From Bunree, we took the caravan to Morvich, set amongst wonderful scenery. From here you can easily reach the Kyle of Lochalsh (there is a co-op supermarket here to stock up) and not far away is the bridge over to Skye. But beware - August is high midge season and they'll eat you alive! Take plenty of Avon Skin so Soft Dry Oil Body Spray in 'Forest Fresh'

From Morvich we then went on to Ullapool where there is a good commercial site overlooking Loch Broom, within walking distance of Ullapool (they actually have midge eating machines dotted around the site), or a bit further along the A835 is the site at Ardmair Point, again overlooking the loch. You are on the doorstep of wonderful mountain country here. Knockan Cliff visitor centre (with toilets) is well worth a visit. Nearby is the 'Wee Mad Road' passing beside Stac Pollaidh (Stac Polly) with a car park here for climbers and walkers and the road carries on for several scenic miles.

We ended our holiday at Rosemarkie (a C&CC site), where the Dolphins can be seen from the site or from nearby Chanonry Point. A word of warning here though. It was June when we were there and it's light very early that far north and we were on pitch No.1. near the entrance. We were woken very early each morning (4.30 a.m. onwards) by the sound of grass cutting machinery by the adjacent golf club cutting the greens.

Apart from that, we had a great holiday. Take wet-weather gear though and be prepared for all weathers. We were in shorts at Bunree and in a howling gale at Ullapool, but be prepared for the dreaded midges in August!

Hi

Craigie Gardens is a lovely site but it is currently surrounded by a building site - An new campus for Ayr college I think. We were there last weekend. The entrance to the site is controlled by traffic lights at the moment. Even with the lights it was a tight squeeze getting in & out the site, trying to pass the lorries. The building work is to go one until September 2011. The site itself is lovely & very well kept by the wardens

Hi Margaret

I too can recommend Grantown On Spey. The disused railway line runs two minutes away from the CC affiliated site, fantastic scenery and easy cycling.

If you want the coast try Dunnet Bay CC site near John O'Groats. Good for a cycle to Castle of Mey. Otherwise I'd suggest Ardmair Point near Ullapool. You can bike / drive around the road to Achiltibuie looking over towards the Summer Isles. Stunning scenery here and a famous mountain Stack Poly all part of the Inverpolly nature reserve.

Cheers

The site you're talking about is Clachan kenneth. We stayed there and it's up in a wood with boggy ground. Because of the shade the midges are out all day long. I was bitten at Bunree and Luss leaving hardly anywhere left to bite so these b*ggers were biting my bites :O(

I agree about the midges. You just have to go when they are not there. DON'T go June to August. Other dates are OK. Been there quite a few times and we were never bothered with them.
