Hi Everyone

We're thinking of spending some of our holiday next June in Germany, perhaps in the Freiburg area. Does anyone know of any good but quiet sites. We don't particularly want on-site entertainment or restaurants just clean, neat and We like places like Alsace and the Alps.

We have heard that Germany is cheaper, (and friendlier) than France. Can anyone confirm this ?

We have never found anyone unfriendly on a French site! Wish I could say the the same for UK!
Hi v.meldre2

I agree with your last sentiment but let me clarify that, like you we have never found anyone unfriendly on French sites, whatever their nationality in the 20 years that we have been going to France. It was just that I had heard that in Germany people seemed even friendlier and I wondered if it was true.

Yes we have found Germany much more friendly than France and in the past 2 years very much cheaper than France.

We have been visiting Germany for 30 years now the last 6 with the caravan so know the country very well.

The two sites we stop at and have found excellent are:

Alisehof 5 star book situated near Bad Rippoldsau-Schapbach, Wolfach in the Black Forest.

Camping Herbolzheim 4 star on the edge of the Black Forest which is probably nearer to Freiburg than Alisehof, but further to drive into the prettiest part of the Black Forest.

Both these sites are listed in the ACSI Camping Card book and at 15 euros per night with the card.

If you need anymore info let me know.

We liked Terrassencamping Herbolzheim when we stayed there. Quite convenient for the motorway. Can get busy towards the end of the day so best to arrive around 3.00pm when the site reopens after lunch.

Hi John

First, I am assuming that you mean Freiburg im Breisgau. We have visited the area a couple of times and stayed at Camping Belchenblick in Staufen. It is a good and friendly site with a lovely walk alongside the river into the local town of Staufen. Staufen itself is well worth a visit. (Don't let your better half see the confectionery shop at Cafe Decker - it will cost in more ways than one.) You can catch a train into Freiburg from a station only a few minutes walk from the camp site.

Here is their website.

There is lots to do in the area, particularly if you like walking.

When we were last there we popped over the border to Mulhouse in France and went to the two French national museums of the Train and of Cars. (Don't bother with the Cars one unless you want to see an awful lot of Bugattis.)

We were at Belchenblick campsite in May of this year and I would confirm what Mike A has said. The owner directs you himself to your pitch and is extreemly helpful. Staufen is very picturesque and is only a short walk from the site. On a clear day, take the cable car to the top of the "Belchen" for views to the Vosges mountains in France across the Rhine valley and over to Switzerland.

The pitch we had had ehu and drainage but not water, but as the tap was only 20 yards away it didn't matter.

Totally agree with Mike A about Belchenblick. We stayed there during Easter 2008 and again for 2 nights during our return journey from Italy.

The local train / tram passes the site from 7.00am and throuout the day but it is very quiet. The train goes to Bad Krotzingen where a connection will take you to Freiburg or further north into Germany or south to Basel in Switzerland. Best of all the train travel is totally free. Frau Giesler in reception will give your whole party travel passes for bus and train routes which are supplied by the local authority to promote tourism.

The family rum site is very friendly.

One thing to be aware of is the charge for metered elictricity, last year it was 40 cents (40p) per unit or Kilowatt / hour, very expensive if the weather is cold and you need lots of heating on.

I believe that it is common for German sites to charge for elictricity in this way but 40cents per unit is very expensive.

We have stayed at Belchenblick a couple of times and like Brum thought the electrics were quite expensive especially as we like to use our own facilities. The last time we stayed we were there for 5 nights! Some of the pitches are a bit small. However the facilities are superb especially the new toilet block. We have stayed of quite a few German sites and Belchenblick is the only one where we have come across metered electricity, that could be because we use Camping Cheques and te ACSI Card mainly and part of the deal includes electrics. We have since discovered another site nearby which we liked(see post above) but it is not quite so convenient for the local amentities as Belchenblick.

There are no extra charges for electricity at Herbolzheim or Alisehof. We only paid extra once last year at an ACSI site in April as we did use more electricity then due to cold nights. Other than that one nothing in Germany or Austria just 13 or 15 euro's per night.
