Sleeping bags v Quilts

Just wondering what the general feeling is about sleeping bags versus quilts for those of us without the luxury of fixed beds. Sleeping bags are easy to store and pack away, but maybe I would be warmer with a continental quilt to cosy up under!? Out for the first time this weekend and was freezing in my sleeping bag! Are quilts awkward to store in the van?

Hi Emmy, we take quilts with us and we store our double under the seats at the front of the van. The childrens duvets are left on their bunks and they stay there as they are fixed bunks. Last year was our first and at Easter we only took our 4 tog duvet and it was freezing, we go away next Sat and the 13.5 tog is coming and this is alot cosier. I keep considering sleeping bags for the children, but then it is no hassle to take the quilts and I think they are warmer. Denise

Emmy,

We always use sleeping bags, the children have the four seasons ones, we just have the thick ones, haven't had any problems so far. Plus they are easy to store.

Emmy it's got to be quilts without any doubt. Far easier to make the bed and far less restrictive for sleeping. Plus we can cutch up together. Only downside if the wife has cold feet.

We have a fixed bed, so use a duvet. However, when we had our two berths with the two singles, we always used sleeping bags because they were easier to store etc. We han honestly say, never had any problems with the cold, but we were using 54oz king size bags!!

We make up our bed and have a duvet on the bottom to sleep on and one to cover us. They both store in the underseat lockers with no problems - and thats including our 2 pillows.

Hi Emmy

We used to have quilts, but now have gone over to sleeping bags, big tog ones though. We use the front as two singles now, got fed up climbing over the hubby in night to go to the loo. We put single quilts as a base then the sleeping bags on top. They all go under the seat plus 4 pillows. Lovely and warm in winter when the blown air is on and you get them out to make the bed up

Hi Emmy

My daughter (aged 15) uses a sleeping bag.

When we make the bed up, we use a duvet under us and one on top. We too store them in the bottom lockers. We don't tend to have the heating on in the night as I get too hot but 'someone' usually gets up around 4am if it's really cold and puts some form of heating on.

I feel very constricted in a sleeping bag so we always use duvets. They store perfectly well in the bed boxes. We use single duvets as it is often easier to make up the beds as singles especially after a few glasses! Gets too complicated doing the jigsaw with the cushion bits!

Quilts every time for us. Nice and warm and I can stick my feet out of it as well. We do sometimes in the winter leave on the heating usually a fan heater though, to give the blown air a rest.

I agree with DavidC. Definitely duvets. we store single ones under the sofas and make up the double bed at night and use a single quilt each.

I find sleeping bags retricting, hot and not luxurious! Quilts/duvets give me some home comfort in my caravan!

i am the same as you dont know what to use any more, we have been using sleeping bags since we started caravaning the only down side i have with them is i cant fit them in the washing machine to wash them, and i like them to be fresh when going away and have them cleaned again when we come back price of dry clearers can mount up duvet covers at least can go in washing machine without any probs.

Oh yes Jane. A lovely duvet is the way to go. Sleeping bags are so...informal? Besides, what's the fun in waking up finding the other half has stolen half a sleeping bag? Now if it's a quilt/duvet, that's another story.....

Hi Emmy

We use a duvet having tried sleeping bags for one trip. We bought an all-in-one top and bottom sheet called "Easymayd". The duvet rolls up inside the sheet and the whole lot stores in a zip up bag which goes under one of the front seats. I think the bag cost around

Just seen your topic. We have always used king size duvets and have been caravanning for over 15 years. We take a 4 tog and a 10.5 tog. decided how cold it is and sleep on the discarded tog value and use the other as a top duvet. That way we can adjust the weight according to the temperature.
