I have a 2 year old Lunar caravan, and have just recentely noticed that slight cracks have appearred in the side walls of the tyres (from metal rim - 25mm outward).

I have been told that this might be due to damage cause by light, which does make sense as there is no cracking to the axle side of tyres. This seem strange as apart from when we are away in it, it is stored inside.

I have also been advised that if their is no cracking between treads they are safe. Although i am a great believer of safety being paramount, this would be an un necessary expense of around £120 if not required.

Can anybody advise me on this matter please?

I had the same problem with my Lunar at the 2 - 21/2 year point. I had "words" with my dealer and Lunar re replacement under warranty and they didn't want to play! I was told by Lunar that they had received a bad batch of tyres from their supplier. To be fair my dealer was prepared to take issue with Lunar over the tyres but when I discovered that I could replace them like with like for about

Change them - Don't muck about - you would be putting your caravan, your lives and other road users at risk by not doing so.

There is a labelling system on tyres that tells you when they were manufactured. You may find that they were getting on a bit before they were even fitted.

In any event if your caravan is worth circa

If the tyre wall is cracked REPLACE IT! I was assured a like tyre was ok by a well known tyre company and had a 5 inch long flap blow out 20 miles south from Caen on a very bumpy rutted road at less than 30 mph. An exprience I wouldn't want to repeat, or wish on anyone.

We now use a local private tyre fitter that everyone localy trusts.

REPLACE THEM !

My Lunar had to have new tyres at less than 2 years old when they developed cracks between the treads the size of the Grand Canyon....and I was blissfully unaware as without sticking your head under the van it's not noticeable. You assume that 18 month tyres are fine.

Tyres are not covered by warrenty generally anyway. If you have a blow out you will regret the inconvenience and loss of use no matter if you are covered with insurance.

I know it's heartbreaking but change them. It is THE most frustrating thing to see tyres with perfectly acceptable tread depths winding up on the scrap heap, but better these than your whole outfit.
