slightly more modern melamine set

Has anyone any idea where I can find a slightly more modern looking Melamine dinner set. I love the look of the Cath kidston sets but there does not seem to be any other choice.

Any others I have seen are the sort my gran would have in her 50s kitchen sideboard.

John Lewis have a set with a big pink flower that's quite trendy but it's expensive or Kleeneze have some that are just plain bold colours that look nice. Pretty sure that I've seen some decent designs in Wilkinsons that are very reasonably priced and are often on 3 for 2.

We decided to stop using melamine plates and are now using proper plates. No more score marks on the plates and easier to clean and dry. As they are cheap, if they break, so what, buy another for

The main reason we are going for melamine is for the weight save. May not be a huge amount but it all helps.

As an alternative to Melamine - you could look at the "unbreakable" Luminarc dinnerware (it's a variant of Pyrex glass) - great range of designs, and if you are planning a holiday in France this summer - then a look in the Hypermarket will reveal some very good prices

Hello, We got lovely modern melamine dinner set in our local pound world, very reasonable and each year they bring in more bits and pieces so it can be added to. Not sure if you have a pound world in your town but maybe there is something similiar.

Hi Tugster, we've just changed to melamine for the reason of weight and also we find that they don't draw the heat out of the food so you don't need to warm the plates.

Our set has square plates and dishes in white with a tulip motif.It's marketed by Quest Leisure and cost

You're right about the weight save Tugster. We carry a couple of cheap 'proper' plates for use in the microwave and they weight more than the whole of our melamine 6 place setting service put together!

We also use the melamine stuff, not necessarily through choice but it is lighter and more importantly, if you have overhead lockers then the dish racks supplied in most accesory shops will accomodate it.

The alternative is to have heavy dishes in alow level cupboard adding weight and occupying space.

A lot depends if you travel only a few miles to a site and then can carry stuff really anywhere, on the back seat for example, or wish to travel far and wide, in which case everything should really have dedicated storage space.

We prefer the latter.

We use lighter weight glass/plastic from French and Spanish supermarkets.

Inexpensive and nicer than melamine, can also be used in microwave if you van has one,rather than the fizz and crackle you get if you microwave melamine.
