Unfortunately we go somewhat overboard about this but there's nothing worse than that horrid smell when you open the van door. For a start we wipe all greasy frying pans/plates etc. with kitchen roll before washing. Each time we are packing the van up we put soda crystals down each plughole including the shower and pour very hot water down to cleanse the pipes and the water hog. It takes a few moments to gurgle down and it seems to work for us.

Don't put bleach down - it isn't like a plastic wastepipe at home! We bought some liquid specifically for the job, and use it when we get back home. Put an old rag up the opening of the outlet pipes, pour the liquid down the plughole, and it slowly seeps out leaving everything smelling fresh ready for the next trip. It's available from any caravan dealer - and it works!

Hi Catherine, we had our last van for just over 6 years and to prevent the smelly pipes I used to pour a little Zoflora down each plug hole after every outing. Also a couple of times a year we would push a trimmed cork into the outlet pipes outside the van and then pour Milton into the sinks leaving it in the sink (so that the pipes are filled with Milton) After half an hour or so pull the corks out to drain the Milton-voila!! lovely fresh pipes and sinks

Use Milton - you can buy it in SuperDrug or any other cheapie type shop for 99p a litre. Plug up drain outlet, pour it down the pipes, quite a strong mix , leave for a while before draining out and your pipes will be tip top.

Hi, Fenwicks make a grey water cleaner , don't use bleach as this will affect the plastic in the caravans pipe work, and is bad for septic tanks and is not liked by camping site owners.

We run the sink hot tap to empty the hot tank down the sink when packing up and we use Motorhome grey water tank cleaner too.

Not only does this rinse out the pipes, it saves scalding the grass when empting the drain plug before towing.
