I may be wrong (but I do not think so) but pressing the TEST button simply tests that the electronic circuitry is working, it does NOT test the actual sensor itself.
As the sensor has a life expiry limit that is why the whole unit should be replaced every 10 years.

The recommendation from the Fire Service is, test the smoke detector each week by pressing the test button. If your detector bleeps upon the test, it is working. The unit should also be hoovered once a month and it should not be painted over. If the battery is nearing the end of its life, a low battery warning should emit from the unit. = I'm referring to a unit which has not been modified.

We never recommend standing under the unit with a lit piece of paper or similar as that has its own safety issues.

However Damian, I will take your point up with a senior officer tomorrow for 100% clarification.

Yes i have fitted a switch to my smoke detectors since 1997, also with both caravans i have converted the alarm to run of the 12volt system.

House is still standing and new alarm fitted.........I am not the bad boy.

People that remove the battery to stop the alarm going off are the bad boys!
