smoking clutch??

Hi, after this weekend away i experienced a burning clutch(smoke even coming through vents) this was after pulling up hill on damp grass. Was this the clutch struggling of just wheel spin? No problems pulling up steeper hills on tarmac.

Van is well light for car, but the car is front wheel drive.

i ve learnt to keep away from wet grass in future!!

If the smell was very acrid it was the clutch. Can't imagine it being smoke from the tyres if the grass was wet.

Yes i also thought it was the clutch, however what i cant understand, why would this only happen on the grass? and why wouldnt the wheel spin before the clutch slipped?
