I've seen a headline today says that G Brown wants to concentrate on improving social mobility.

Well what can be more social and mobile than caravanning?

Shady Sadie's answer-

Zero rated VAT on Caravans and accessories.

Fuel prices capped at 85pence a litre and the use of red diesel for caravanners. (family boats are no more than caravans afloat)

Caravan sites business rates and tax's to be halved.

Truck free roads on Sunday like France.

What can be better for your health than getting away to the countryside or coast and relaxing?

Shades,

Cynically and admittedly, without seeing the headline or the article, it sounds like Gordie might have realised just how many

As is the case with Labour most of the time, Brown's idea of social mobility has nothing to do with what a humble voter might think it would. It's someting to do with child poverty.

If the goods in the shops were cheaper and fuel cheaper then there would be less child poverty I think.

If I can get the caravan rated as a second home and fuel on expenses I may well stand at the next election.

Can I join your party, Sadie? SS for Prime Minister, I say! Val A for Chancellor, then I can buy a newer van, and claim the same allowances!

Sadie, I've just been thinking about this 'social mobility' thing - and thinking about how upwardly socially mobile the kids I grew up with were. We were all from council houses, born at the end of the forties, or early fifties. None of us had pushy parents, most of them working in local industry or cleaning at the local hospital, but all of them hard-working, honest, and careful with their money. One of the kids from my road is (or rather was until his early retirement in his early fifties) the MD of Italian Nuclear Fuels - and now lives overlooking Lake Garda - another is the CE of some Megacorporation in Australia, there were a couple who became doctors, two who became senior nurses or (then) NHS 'managers', and a headmaster. My husband grew up in a council maisonette, and from the block of eight maisonettes, the kids he grew up with are now an MP, the headmaster of a prestigious school, a very high-up with Network Rail and my OH who is a director of an engineering company. Not all of us went to Grammar School, but it seems to me that we all had ambition, and most of us got on to the best of our abilities. I'm not sure it's the same now though. The house I grew up in is now housing a mis-fit family from a sink estate in the nearby large town.

I'm sure we can make a better job of running the country than the present bunch - but do I really want the stress???? I'd rather go away in my caravan, thinking about it!!! Perhaps I'll think again when I can no longer afford to do so because of the mess the current lot have got us into.

Sorry but I didn't have the humble start that you and your partner did, at least he turned out good unlike the other crooks that came from his block -MP , Headmaster and Network Rail. I'd keep quiet about that ;-)

I took over my late fathers business when I was very young and only got where I am today by looking after staff and by trying to understand others needs. I find it sad that our politicians seem so out of touch with reality and that the likes of Brown and some of his chronies have little idea of real world work and have made a career from idealistic dreams combined with political ambition and social climbing.

I think that politicians should have to be at least 45 before they are able to stand for election, that way they would have some real life experience and be able to understandmore about relationships and bringing up families :)

Social mobility NO we need to keep the wasters in one place, it will be easier to control when a right right wing goverment takes over. 1917 dosen't seem that long ago, sometimes I think Polititians need a little reminder !!!
