somebody is having a laugh

Also worth getting quotes from the two Clubs Insurance team.

You have the legal right to cancel an auto renewal before the actual renewal date. Tell your bank and ensure they block the insurers DD.Obviously write / email the Insurer cancelling the auto renewal.

Since Covid it seems to me loyalty with an Insurer now means nothing!

Sadly cancelling a Continuous Payment Authority is almost impossible as banks cannot "see" that a payment is to be made. To them it is like you walking into a shop and using the card to buy something. The payment only shows up when a payment is requested.

Very annoying which is why within a day of taking out the insurance, I advise in writing that I want auto-renewal switched off and confirmed in writing. Different if you paid by direct debit as you can cancel, but you are still liable for a fair chunk of the premium payment. If you cancel the DD, pay the remainder upfront to avoid any future hassles.

Our insurers for cars, dog and houses provides internet access to enable auto renewal to be turned off. They are also excellent when being contacted by phone. Never had any issues like you reported.

Get this.
I have had car and house insured with LV for some years. Last year the car insurance went up from about £500 to £533. I rattled their cage and they 'got it down' to £506. This year it was £565 and they 'managed to get it down to £533 - so I went looking elsewhere.
U-Switch offering Allianz came up with £314 - Allianz own LV but use LV's name for holding the insurance. Looks good I thought, so I went through all the questions using the Allianz web site and made a few corrections. Result? Quote now £533! I went back several times removing the changes I had made and tracked it down to one entry on my son's info. He is a Fresh Water Tech for a well know water supplier. For some reason U-Switch had interpreted 'Fresh Water Tech' as Sewage Worker. That single change increased the premium by 70%!! Went back, reverted it to Sewage Worker and the premium reverted to £314. So I told LV what to do with it.
I ended up with the AA which was about £350 plus service charge - about £382 in total, and essentially identical cover.

Exact wording of jobs can be a major issue - my son works in the car insurance industry and even he needs to try different (true) descriptors of his job to get the lowest premium.

Well just had my renewal fro Allianz for Santa Fe, premium gone down on last year, I never agree to auto renewal either

This year £310 last year £378

Same here, but I still don't understand why - let's face it - a labourer gets a better deal than a trained tech?
The even more difficult bit is that it seems to be the word 'technician' that causes the issue - except on the AA and Aviva who both quoted similar prices against my son's true job title!

D'oh!
