I agree wholeheartedly with Ray. We'd been coming here on hols in the caravan for a few years, and now we live here and absolutely love it. Have to say the area around Brean is actually one of my least favourite parts of the county and the beaches, especially on that part of the North Somerset coast aren't exactly, well, Cornish beaches, lol (meaning, although big, they're quite muddy looking - well, it IS mud when the tide's out - and they're flat, with no rock pools to speak of. But if you like huge flat beaches with acres of space to play ball games, then they're fine!). It's a very rural county, with tons of farmland interspersed with lovely little villages, and big long stretches of hills to break up the landscape. We're constantly discovering new places to visit - went to a pretty little chocolate-box village called Uphill yesterday, just south of Weston super Mare. It has a huge (but much quieter than Weston) beach, good clear views across to Weston and Brean Down (and even South Wales) and a nice walk along the sandy banks of the River Axe, which is full of boats. Porlock Weir, just down from Minehead, is gorgeous. Porlock and Dunster villages are like something out of a Jane Austen novel, they almost look like time has stood still there. And if you want to get right back to the 21st century, as Ray has said, the Clarks village at Street is a wonderful shopping experience. The Carnivals are out of this world, the first time we saw the Bridgwater one I was jumping up and down (and dancing!) with excitement. We're going again (of course!) this year with our very good friends

And no, I don't work for the Tourist Board either.....like Ray, we just love it here.

We really must remember to find a carnival viewing spot a bit nearer to the toilets this time

We often ride into Wells on the bus on market days when we're in Somerset and having been to Dunster with it's nearby steam railway and the villages around the Mendips I agree with both Ray and Sue, there is some lovely rural scenery away from the estuary.

I'll do my best to find a better place this year, Steve......I'm going to go on a recce soon! PS Bridgwater has no 'e' in the middle - they clearly can't spell there! (I could comment further on that but have no wish to cast aspersions on the inhabitants of the county we now live in and love, lol)
