Anyone tow with a diesel and find they get black deposits over the front of the caravan - worse on the tailpipe side? I do and I'm assuming this is exhaust deposits. Whats the best wax or cleaning solution for this to both prevent the worst and clean off what still gets on there? (car is due a service soon so that may help with prevention!!)

If you drive the car carefully, and avoid flooring the accelerator, you minimise the back crud which comes out of the exhaust pipe.

They are exhaust deposits.Dont use low grade supermarket diesel Try Texaco or Shell. Ihad my exhaust pipe altered so that it exhausted to the side of the car and not the rear. Try MER polish.

you can get a chrome exhaust deflector several sizes in halfords this cured the problem on my xantia hope this helps

I agree with Harold on the fuel and Mer. I get approx 10% better fuel consumption using Texaco and this is backed up regularly by Honest John in the Telegraph motoring page. Maybe an exhaust deflector on the end of the pipe would help?

I believe you can stick cling film to the front of your van, then just peel it away when you get to the other end.......voila....no deposits

To minimise deposits use millers diesel clean additive.i have never found any deposits with my 3 yr old Passat tdi 130 pd,if you have an older i d engine then im afraid thats par for the course

Andy, I use Fenwicks Caravan Cleaner then Bobby Dazzler. Works every time.

Hi Andy. we are on our3rd diesel towcar and 4th caravan in the same time all the cars have left very fine black dust in the caravan, not so noticeable on the outside, but we find it on plastic surfaces, perhaps caused by static, but mainly on the left of the caravan, directly behind the car exhaust. We just clean it off best place to find it is on the plastic sides of drawers.

Is your car serviced as it should be? I tow with a BMW 525dSE, and have not found any such problem. Diesels chuck out a lot of the black stuff if the injectors are inefficient. If the car's serviced as it should be, then you shouldn't have any problems.

Many thanks for all replies so far. I will give all suggestions a try. My car is a 2000 year BMW 530d SE Touring which I would recommend to anyone. It has a full BMW service history. I have noticed recently that when accelerating away at night I can see some smoke from my car in the headlights of the cars behind me but perhaps a new air filter on its service later this month may help. Its certainly no worse than any previous diesel I've owned (except maybe a 320,000 mile cavalier I taxied for a while!!). I have just bought a brand new caravan which is why I posted this as I dont want it looking like s**t in the first few months! I think as far as prevention goes a really good coat of wax on front of van will go a long way and I like the cling film idea although it must look awful!!

PC tested some polish a few months ago, was it auto glaze or somthing similar? Anyone remember what it was called, where I could get some and anyone tried it themselves?

On my Terrano, the exhaust width is larger than the tail pipes you can get from Halfords. Instead, I order an exhaust elbow (45 degrees) from milnerconv.co.uk and attached with steel screws. Does the job perfectly - no more "Sooty van"!
