Sorrento Vs Santa Fe

Hi, thinking about buying a 4x4 for towing my Compass Coroner 1250kg van and both of the above seem like good towing vehicles. The Sorento looks like it will tow more, but I like the look of the Santa Fe and people have said this would be better for day to day driving without a van.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has either of these vehicles and how they find towing and day to day driving.

Cheers

Gary why a Sorento why not try a Sportage 2.ltr xs i tow a 1460kgs van with no problems what so ever, great solo also, mpg solo 38/42 mpg, towing 25/27 mpg you will not get anywhere near that with the Sorento also if you go for a newer model Sportage you will get a 7 yr warrenty .can,t be bad ,would recom end the Sportage.against any other 4x4 .

ps the hyundi is just about the same as the Sportage (more expensive)

anymore info required give me another post

Hi Gary,

Do you really need a 4x4? There are plenty of other largish vehicles (MPV's) that would tow your caravan without any real trouble, they will give you the higher seating for the views, better road manners both solo and towing, and better MPG, and lower servicing,Tax and repair costs.

Its a person choice of course, but I just wonders if you had considered alternatives.

thanks for the replies. I've fancied getting a 4x4 for a while and my Mondeo struggles with our van. I wanted to get something that would easily tow this 1250 van plus something heavier in the future when we upgrade. Looking at reviews and talking to people the Sorento seems to be a good choice for towing....

Having looked into towing further I must admit to being a bit confused now on what you can tow. For example the Sorento can tow a max braked vehicle of 3500kg but I see as a rule of thumb you should not exceed 85% of kerb weight of vehicle. So the Sorento kerb weight is 2079, so 85% of that is around 1767 so how can this differ so much from 3500 figure quoted by the manufacturer?

Thanks.

Gary 85% is only a guideline that is recommended you do not have to stick to that.good car for towing is the 2.ltr Passat had a estate before the Sportage great power but found it just a very very slight light for my Charisma great price at Arnolds just know fast of the mark as well (but handbrake was not to my liking, press button )

try the ssangyong rexton with plenty of weight to spare if you change the van. It can give the sorento a run for it's money

Hi Gary,

We have a Hyundai 2 ltr diesel Santa Fe 05 plate. It is a great tow car ( just been to Ireland and back ). This is how good we rate the car....... wait for it!.......my wife drives it all the time ( except when towing )and she thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread. She wouldn't drive all the other towcars we had. You can't get better recommendation than that.

Gary

If you are buying new, wait a while and you will find that the new Sorento is almost the same car as the Santa Fe, literally. Hyundai own Kia.

Thast aside they are both good value vehicles imo.

Cheers

I have an 04 Sorento which has been very reliable and is a great tow car. I camn even do some off road work and green laning. Howver if I wanted a 4wd for towing and more road orienated mmanners then I would not hesitate to choose the Santa Fe. It's mpg will be better than the Sorento. The new Sorento due out in 2010 is more like the Sanat Fe in that it is a Cross Over Vehicle targeted at the road orientated user.

Cheers

Gary,

Having towed down to the med for many a year with trusty Audi A6 allroad & Audi A4's, this year after being made redundant I bought a Kia Sorento 05 on a 55 plate, Wow what a difference!

I bought the Sorento because it was the best of the crop so to speak, admittably mine is a 2.5 diesel manual, but driven sensibly I get 38+ solo & 28+ towing, to me its the most superb tow car ever!

All I would say is look around any caravan site & count the Sorentos' then you'll understand why caravaners buy them!

hi i own a 57 plate hyundai santa fe cdx 7 auto and tow a 2008 bailey senator twin axel wyoming with ease. its a great tow car and not bad on fuel when towing. the only thing is when you go up a really steep hill when towing you may have to pop the auto box in manual mode and drive it on the manual tiptronic side of the box but thats fine it does it with ease.

Its really quiet for a diesel aswell. i have had a few niggles with it but who doesnt on a brand new car.

alan is correct when the new sorento does come out it will be having 7 seats like some of the santa fe's.

good luck and let us know what you choose

And then there's the other side to the story!

My father-in-law has a 2000 registered Discovery TD5 which he has had from new, and hasn't had a spot of bother with it.

Whilst I haven't owned the other vehicles mentioned, I have droven them during a National Towcar Awards event. I must say that the Sorento was a huge disappointment following all the hype from the Caravan Club. I commented upon this to one of the other judges, who remarked "it's like driving a blancmange isn't it?" I know what she meant. Apparently, following criticism of the choppy solo ride on early Sorento's, the suspension was altered (softened) when the vehicle had its face lift. That made a more compliant solo ride, but it was sloppy when towing compared to many other vehicles.

We also tested Shogun, Landcruiser(s), Jeeps, Hyundai, Ssang yong to mention but a few, all of which had their own issues for one reason or another.

The choice must be yours and what suits you. If you get a bad car of whatever make (as the previous post says, even on a new Hyundai) you'll curse it. If you get a good one, you'll be singing its praises. There's far too much heresay and media hype spouted about all vehicles. Some of the cars mentioned above, based on my own experiences I wouldn't touch with a barge pole, but owners of them seem more than happy.

It's got to be your choice. Have a good drive of both before you do though.

I have a '56 Santa Fe and apart from the non RDS radio I cannot fault it but if you are considering new hang on because the i55 is about to arrive. Saw one in France last month, very similar to Santa Fe but a new model.
