space between caravans

Hi Jean.

I believe the measurement between caravans should be a minimum of 6 metres of clear space. This is often used a car parking on a lot of pre marked out sites. By clear space I mean the distance from the awning of the van on your left to the side wall of the caravan on your right, looking at both vans from the front view.

The idea of this is to provide a fire break between caravans should the unthinkable happen. While this distance may provide protection from crossover of fire, it will not stop heat damage and most things plastic will distort in that senario.

You will find some people pitching a lot closer on non marked out grass fields. I don't know for why though. I prefer pirivacey myself and so tend to pitch further apart.

By your comment, I'm guessing you have been on a site where you felt over crowded?

Regards

Steve L.

Hi Jean

If you are thinking of the UK Steve is right but not over in Europe they site caravans much nearer together almost touching on some Eastern Europe sites.

Hi Jean,

We stayed on a TCS site in Switzerland a few years ago. The outfits were pitched so close, you could have fondled the occupants of the caravans next to you. Alas no one fondled me!

Hi Steve

Thanks for the information

it was the uk I was interested in.

No we have not visited an over crowded site.

it was just that at the weekend a group of us were discussing different caravan sites and rules and regs ect. but not one of us knew the legal space between caravans, and I knew some one on the forum would know the answer.

So thanks once again

If you avoid these sites, then owners will soon get the message.

We only use UK sites, we fly to europe.

On Uk sites we only use pitches with a minimum of 14 "strides" between A frames.

I don't know if things have changed, but when i asked this question many years ago, the local fire authorities were held as responsible.

Aidan

I know what you mean!

We will never forget the Wild duck site, we had, and i do not exaggerate, a pup tent pitched with in 3 foot of our A frame, they were a group of six pup tents. A mixed group of one women, and man along with a group of boys.

They all gathered round the fire late into the night, drinking and swearing. Later they when off to the club, and ironically as us to kept an eye on there tents, being diplomatic we agreed.

The next day the police arrived and arrested them, they had been turning over the shower money boxes, while touring the area!!

Before the comments come i would point out that i use too tent, and my daughter still does.

I do apologise for the poor grammar, i'm half asleep today!

And we have no edit!

i just think that some sites mix the caravan with the tents the some tenters dont seem to care where they pitch and tents are getting that big we wouldnt put are caravan right next to some one and i do think some of it is down to the warden eg the weekend a tenter pitched right at the back of us the guide roles went under the van im not having a go i love tenting just some people did to think

I always thought it was 20ft between faces of caravans and same for tents

We now only use CL's as there is always plenty of room

If the site is licensed by the local authority, and it must be if its not one of the exempted organisiations, caravan club, camping and caravaning club etc (they have their own rules) the site licence conditions would say 20ft, sometimes less with tents. if you have a problem then contact the local council for that area and report the site for non complience, before the council can revoke a licence they have to prosecute three times so the more complaints the better.

What were the measurements on that Rally you went on?

Maybe something here to help you get your cash back??

Cheers

Jean,

It's not a legal requirement, more a Club rules, site rules or local regs (which is still site rules) thing. I believe that 20 feet (6 meters) is the distance between units but you can put a vehicle in the 20 feet gay as long as there is still 10 feet of clear space.

When i questioned the spacing, i was told its the local authority, with input from the fire brigade.

One site we use the vans must face away from the lake, for easy removal in the event of fire, so i am told.
