Spare Battery

I removed the old battery as I was replacing it with a new one. For some reason I thought the old battery was an 85 Ah unit, but is actually a 100 Ah unit.

(Elecsol 100 Carbon Fibre Leisure Battery
As seen here: https://www.tayna.co.uk/Elecsol-Batteries )

I put it on a smart charger for a few days and after taking it of charge and letting it rest for 30 or so hours I took a voltage reading, 12.99v.

The battery is evidenced (by a supplier's sticker) as being installed in 2011, so I was rather surprised at the voltage reading after charging, seems good to me, but is it really?

Because I am getting such a good reading, does this indicate that this battery is good as a sparebackup for when being off EHU ?

P.S. I have a motor mover, so if I switched over to the old battery I would be relying on it somewhat for motor mover use, especially for getting the caravan onto the driveway after returning home.

12.99 as a resting voltage is very good, however to determine how substantial the battery is it would need to be drop tested to see how it stands up to a heavy discharge and whether there are any faulty cells.

Any garage should be able to do this for you.

I have( I think) a drop tester in the garage, it is some kind of rapid discharge device and was purchased many moons ago and never used.

I would need to read up or ask someone how to use it (I have a motor mechanic friend -perhaps he can advise), I will let you know how this goes, thank you.

I put the battery on the drop tester this morning.

There are many posts on the net saying that a drop charger should not be used on a leisure battery, however,
Elecsol (100 Carbon Fibre Leisure Battery) claimed in their blurb that the battery was dual purpose and suitable for cranking an engine, best I could ascertain was that cold cranking amps for this battery is between 300 and 350 amps (the company no longer exists).

So, following the parameters of the drop tester I rapid discharged the battery for 10 seconds (actually I drop tested the battery twice - just t see if I had a different reading second time around).

The battery remained within the 'good' sector on both drops, after leaving the battery to rest for 30 minutes I read 12.8v using a multi-meter.

Seems good for a 6 year old battery !

Any opinion on these results please ?

It should be good , charge them both up , then use the old one first , keeping the new one as the stndby then swop over, Suck it and see. :cheer:
