Spare tyre weight

Has anyone tried using a temporary repair cartridge and a compressor to save the weight of the spare tyre? I run a 3500 Kg Hymer that is very close to its max permissible weight. I see a number of new cars don't now have spares - just the tube of gunk and the compressor. Any one have ideas? experience? advice?
 
Hiya - haven't used mine but all I was provided with on my new van was the repair kit you describe.
Weight isn't a problem for me so I've purchased a proper spare wheel as the kit is not suitable for sidewall damage - don't want to be stranded with a compressor and tube of gooo!!!
