Spare tyre

2 years ago I replaced my van and went to my local tyre centre to buy a spare. I left the wheel with them and returned later to collect it and was presented with a bill for £60. When I queried it the man told me caravan tyres are specially made like all trailer tyres and are more expensive. He explained that the T on the casing meant trailer. I now know it is a speed rating? Was I ripped off?

The price is in the right order. You can cheaper imports, and as a spare tyre that may be perfectly satisfactory. But as stated you need a commercial rated tyre and they are dearer. Mine was about 50 pounds including valve etc.

Yes, 'T' is a speed rating but for speeds up to 190km/h (118mph). For a caravan or trailer, 'R' would be more than adequate.
