Spare wheel carrier

I have great difficulty in trying to slide the spare wheel carrier back into position due to my caravan being 7ft6 wide as you do not have enought clearance to clear the chassis, and this cannot be done by one single person. Are these carriers all the same length as I did not have this trouble on my 7ft2 caravan. Has anyone found a simple and easy method of sliding the frame with the tyre on back underneath the caravan.

Comments appreciated.

First of all, as you have the carrier out, thoroughly grease the exposed tubes at the other end. Take the wheel off and slide the carrier several times back and forth to distribute the grease. To get adequate clearance you could try repositioning the wheel on the carrier, or jacking up the van to provide just enough clearance.

Try dropping the nosewheel right down and then sliding the wheel carrier in with it slightly moved to the rear of the van. There are some current posts in the Forum about the issues with spare wheel carriers. If you cannot get it out or back when on the drive how much more difficult will it be when you do it for real? That is why I always carry the wheel in the van.

ALKO have 4 different carriers up to widths of 1815mm. I have found that if you do not pull the carrier out to the stops it is easier to push back in.I have put a jubilee clip round the extending bars to prevent the carrier pulling out fully .
