Speed limit when towing in France

Hi everyone.

I've just read on another thread that the speed limit is 110k/h if the train mass in 3.5 Tonne.

Is this correct?

Yes, and they are not allowed to use the left-hand lane of a three-lane motorway (this does not apply to outfits with a gross train weight under 3.5 tonnes).

I understand the high speed also requires tyres with a high spped rating (R from memory) and that the police have been known to check. The Caravan Club leaflet on wheels and tyres tells you how to check.

The 'R' speed rating is good for 170km/h which is well above the speed limit for caravans anywhere and I don't know of any tyre with a lower speed rating. But the need for tyre equipment to be in line with actual speed conditions applies everywhere, not just in France.

In France, the speed limit for vehicles towing under 3500Kg is no different to a solo vehicle, except where there are signs to indicate differently. These are usually where you would expect - long downhill motorway descents for example, where the limit is 90kph.

So, yes, on a motorway it is legal to do 130kph while towing - not that I'd want to though.

By the way, on non-motorway dual carriageways where the French allow 110km/h, the speed limit is restricted to 100km/h if the gross train weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes.

Thanks for the info'. I have up to now been led by the CC guide that quotes towing as being the same as the national speed limit.
