Speed restrictions?

Driving past our local Police Station today I noted that - overnight a road sign appeared - a 30 mph speed limit has been placed just prior to the exit and on that side of the road only. However, travelling in the oppsoite direction the speed limit is unchanged!!! It still stands at 40 mph. I always thought it was impossible without an act of Parliament for speed restrictions on roads to be changed, or am I wrong. AND what is the correct limit on this particular stretch of road. Is your guess as good as mine? Has this been placed there without permission? All seems a bit dodgy to me!

Anne, it is the local council who determine speed limits for roads within their boundaries, it does not need an Act of Parliament to change them, however, any change must be published prior to being changed.

Ring your local Higways Department to find out the speed limits on that road.

It is probably done for your own safety because of emergency vehicles exiting.

Would you see a police car in advance of it reaching the entrance?

This would probably explain why the limit applies in one direction only.
