Thank you Malcolm, that's why I am campaigning to have people who make derogatory comments about other people's literacy skills barred for a short period.

Regards.

Lisa,

Firstly, I did not see the posting you refer to, so cannot comment on that particular episode.

A short while ago I removed a posting, and that resulted in a lot of petty remarks about moderating, and so forth , so a different method of moderating was set up whereby offensive posts or comments are removed, but the vaild part of the post is left.

Because of the forum setup, the editing area is quite difficult to use, and very slow and cumbersome, so some posts stay on longer than we would like.

One of the options suggested was exactly what you are suggesting, a short ban, and that option is still open to be used.

The Mod team know that some users have great difficulty posting, and they are to be applauded for sticking with it and making valuable contributions, even when the speling and grammar are not exactly perfect, and offensive comments have and will continue to be removed as quickly as possible.

The forum is supposed to be a relaxed place for like minded people to share thoughts, views and technical information in a civilised manner.

It is not the place for personal rudeness to other users for whatever reason, and it is certainly not a place where exact spelling and punctuation are needed, if it were, there would be very few users!!

So far the revised moderating seems to be working well, but please rest assured that persistent abusers of the forum etiquette will have their account suspended if it is necessary.

Hello LMH,

I saw the post in question, and whilst I am not the worlds best grammatical authority, I did not spot anything that should have elicited the response it got.

Quite out of the blue and unconnected with any previous posting or query, a contributor who has posted frequently, and with considerable knowledge of caravanning, decided to drop a remark as a response to what in my opinion was a perfectly reasonable question.

This response was out of character, and I did wonder if our furry antipodean friend had wormed his way back in and was out to cause trouble, but having reviewed to-days postings, it I clear that it was an original posting from a long standing member, and it saddens me to think that anyone could have made the remark in such an unfeeling way.

I sincerely hope that the remark and its implications do not stop anyone from posting genuine questions.

I did not see the original comment so do not know how offensive it was - perhaps an apology is warranted, but surely there is no need for a protracted witch hunt.

This has to be as bad as the original comment.

It isn't a protracted witch hunt actually, it's all about standing up against discrimination and prejudice.

Hi Mod 2

Thanks for your reply and thank you to the mod who removed the offensive post.

It's great to see that you are working together to bring order to the forum.

Merry Christmas.

I did not see the post that has offended some people so cannot comment as to if it was derogatory or not. We have to trust the moderators judgement on that.

However I think the response has been a bit over the top with people calling for posters to be barred for what could be considered as a minor infringement.

I may be old fashioned but to be taken seriously a persons grammar has to be of a certain standard. I dont mean the odd spelling mistake( I'm as guilty as anyone on that score) nor do I mean the odd grammatical error.

I'm talking about a post of several sentences with not one capital letter.

What is that about?

My children knew at the age of 4 that a new sentence starts with a capital letter. This is not rocket science, its a fundamental rule.

To type everything in lower case seems to me to be lazy and show lack of respect to anyone who tries to read the post.

Now I,m sure that a number of people will not agree with me and may call for me to be barred or hung, drawn and quartered.

But freedom of speech should allow just that even if other people do not like the message.

Thanks for your comments Cliff. I note that maybe you are new to the forum as I could only find a couple of posts from you. However, I appreciate that you may have been visiting this forum for a while without posting.

I would just like to state that over the past couple of years or so, unfortunately on occasion, some particularly nasty posts have been made poking fun at people's grammar and spelling. I'm fortunate that my literacy skills arn't too bad. However, some people who use this forum do have dyslexia. Could you imagine Cliff if you had dyslexia and made a post and someone insulted your grammar and spelling skills? How would you feel? Just try to imagine that. I for one would be absolutely mortified.

I am just making the point that personal insults regarding people's literacy skills should not be tolerated and as the mod states above, those sorts of posts will be removed thank goodness.

'Freedom of speech' is a rather grey area and thankfully doesn't apply to everything which goes on in life.

Regards

Lisa

i have to agree with cliff on this one its so easy to put a full stop at the end of each sentence so as to make the post easy to read even if they dont use upper case letters although upper case makes it easier still to read i never saw the post so cant comment so come on whoever posted it and own up im sure all us people who missed it are dying to find out it surely doesnt warrant a ban though maybe just a week in the stocks oh well back to my spread in the country ill leave you peasants to get on with your lives and wish you all a merry christmas....

....Oops, sorry chaps and chappesses, I got carried away for a moment then ;O) what a silly Billy I am.

While we're on the subject of spelling, I think I might be the first to point out the poor spelling in LB's name. All these years, and nobody else has noticed. That's the first time that I've been first at anything.

Its an Olde English kind of name Mike P. The Braykewyndes go back to Saxon times and allied themselves to the Normans. For services rendered my ancestor, Gunna Braykewynde was made a Marcher Lord protecting West Mercia from the pagan Welsh. The family motto is "Ad Nauseum Anus Eruptus". :O)

Hi, I just wanted to say that i didn't know that I was Tony Blair's secretary. I do put full stop's where they are needed but dont always use capital letters at the begining of sentences. I admit I am a rubbish speller as you can see but that's me and im not changing because someone has said I have rubbish grammer.

Does everybody leave two spaces after a full stop and one after a commer?.

Well not all of us are perfect.

(told you my spelling was rubbish, lol).

Well actually no :) I'm told that the habit I picked up years ago is totally old fashioned and out of the window now.

As long as we can make sense of what is written - that's all that matters.

I am crap at spelling, yet i noticed that the 2 on here who seem

to feel it is important, both have problems with starting a

sentance.

Cliff, you started you last sentance with "but" thats a no,no.

LB. you started your first sentence with !i! not a capital.

Now for me thats fine, because as i have already said my spelling

isn't upto much, nor is my grammer.

On the otherhand if you are going to make statements about

the importance of spelling or grammar, then its hard to take

you serious if you do not set an example....

Lmaaooooo gio, it wasn't meant to be taken seriously, hence I have no problem with how people spell ;O) I do find it hard to read a post though if someone posts without punctuation, where one sentence blends into another and I'm sure others do too.

I'm glad you pointed that out to me, I didn't know thatyou couldn't start a sentence with "but".

You are too modest Giovanni, for you to know that means your grammer is way better than mine and I stand chastised.

My grammer and spelling aren't brilliant and I have no problems with 99.9% of the posts on this forum. I try to make my posts as legible as I can.

My point was about making a post easier to read by using capital letters where needed. It was meant to be a constructive comment rather than a critical one.

Its no big deal really and I wouldn't have bothered to post if someone hadn't started the thread. I'm sorry if you feel offended.

I would not be so arrogant as to think I could set an example to other people on this forum, many of whom are much better educated than myself.

As for people taking me seriously, well I don't take myself too seriously so forgive me if I don't worry too much.

Have a merry Christmas

Sorry this is 1960s English Teaching, the old laws on And & But went out of the window in the 80s. Most people taught after say 1978 would see no problem using and or but, they use it instead of inserting a comma on a longish sentence. I only know because Val told me and her English is A grade. Remember the , after and and but. It all changes
